Gorbachev: Fear of Soviets eases
. MOSCOW ! AP) — Mikhail S. Gorbachev called for a new relation-
ship with the Soviet Union’s communist allies, rejected the “ar-
rogance” of hardliners and said his reforms have eased fears of the
Soviets.
“As we set forth our concepts of the new way of thinking, we do not
in the least claim a monopoly on the truth,” the Kremlin leader said
in a speech Wednesday to foreign communists, revolutionaries and
socialist leaders here for the 70th anniversary of the 1917 Bolshevik
Revolution. _________
Gorbachev lauded “perestroika,” his multifaceted program to
restructure the Soviet economy and society, and called for creative
approaches to communism from the'Eastern bloc.
But he said, “No one has any ready-to-use prescriptions.” He said
socialist communities outside Moscow should take a significant role
in “renewal and qualitative changes” in the communist movement.

North mum to grand jury questions
WASHINGTON (AP) — Lt. Col. Oliver L. North is now obeying
subpoenas to appear before the' grand jury investigating his role in
the Iran-Contra affair, but he still is refusing to cooperate.
North appeared briefly before the special federal grand jtiry on
Wednesday, consulting five times with his defense attorneys in a
hallway before leaving after 20 minutes.
The former National Security Council aide apparently refused to
answer a series of questions by Invoking his Fifth Amendment right
against self-incrimination. It appeared that North refused to answer
committee questions about documents.
North’s grand jiiry appearance came after an eight-month legal
fight in which defense lawyers unsuccessfully challenged Walsh’s^
.authority to investigate the sale of arms to Iran and the diversion of
profits to the JMicaraguan Contra rebels. ..
Jessica McClure loses little toe A
MIDLAND (AP) — Jessica McClure has lost a little toe as a result
ot her 5812-hour ordeal at the bottom of a dry water well, but doctors
haven’t decided whether the 19-month-old girl will have a big toe am-
putated as well. ■
Orthopedic surgeons Wednesday removed the little toe on the tod-
dler’s right foot in her fifth operation at Midland Memorial Hospital
-since her Oct. 16 rescue, which drew international attention.
Jessica was listed in stable condition following the operation, and
no additional surgery was immediately scheduled, hospital
spokeswoman Sue R-istom said.
Hospital officials have said it probably will be another month
before the toddler can go home.
