SPRING BREAK
Top O' The Mornin'
By Kika De La Garza
Representative for
the 15th District
On March 17, “Irishmen” of every
ethnic background will celebrate St.
Patrick’s Day by the wearin’ of the
green, dining on the traditional feast
of corned beef and cabbage and
green beer and marching in
parades. The first celebration of St.
Patrick’s Day in America was in
1737.
As for St. Patrick himself, many of
the facts about him have been buried
under centuries of Irish legend and
there is a great deal of controversy
and speculation about the
chronology of events in his life. The
only definite statement to be made
about his birthplace is that he was
not bom in Ireland. Conflicting
evidence points to his being bom in
Kilpatrick, Scotland, sometime
between 373 and 395, but some
scholars have claimed his place of
birth as England, Wales or France.
He might well have been bom in
Spain, for Galicia or the Gallegos
are a Celtic people. Neither is it
known whether March 17 was the
birth or the death date of St.
Patrick; it may in fact be neither.
Some facts, however, as known,
such as the fact that at the age of six-
teen, Patrick was captured by Irish
marauders or pirates and taken to
Ireland where he was sold into
slavery. For six years Patrick work-
ed as a herdsman, and during this
time of frequent solitude, he ex-
perienced a spiritual awakening and
began to have dreams and visions
which he considered to be divinely
inspired by God. One of his dreams
led him to escape his captivity. After
returning to his family, he had
another dream that he must go back
to the land where he truly found his
faith and share that faith with the
Irish pagans. So it was then that
Maewyn or Saccat, one of which was
his given name, entered the
priesthood and chose the name
Patrick. St. Patrick founded chur-
ches and schools across Ireland and
converted the Irish people from
Druidism to Christianity.
Two legends we still associate
with St. Patrick are the driving of
snakes out of Ireland and his using
the shamrock to teach about the Ho-
ly Trinity. Whatever the facts might
be about St. Patrick and his life, he
certainly has one festive and fun
celebration held in his name. HAP-
PY ST. PATRICK’S DAY!!

......aside from the fact that yards
and fields are just now beginning to
green up, and even bluebonnets are
appearing along the highway, the
calendar says it won’t officially be
spring for another week or so. That
means green should then become the
prevailing color, just a little late of
St. Patrick’s Day, a day that has,
over the years, come to mean a lot in
our family. Though we were always
a bit prone to the wearin’ of the
green, after That Gal brought Irish
into our family, we really got with it,
and it has been a family tradition for
years.
-gfr-
......one of the things which has
always been a high spot in our
observance of St. Patrick’s Day are
the toasts. We’ve found them
humorous, witty, serious, and
thought-provoking.
-gfr-
......the Irish have a way of saying
it: Like “May the saddest day of
your future be no worse than the sad-
dest day of your past.” And, on the
funnier side, “An Irishman never
believes he has had too much to
drink so long as he can hold on to one
blade of grass to keep from falling
off the face of the earth.”
-gfr-
......more o’ the green: “May you
live as long as you want, and never
want as long as you live”, or “May
you live to be a hundred years old,
with an extra year in which to re-
pent.” Also, “May you be in heaven
an hour before the devil knows
you’re dead.”
-gfr-
......and our long time favorite:
“May the road rise to meet you, may
the wind always be at your back, the
sunshine warm on your face, the
rain soft on your fields, and, until we
meet again, may God hold you in the
hollow of His hand.”
-gfr-
......from our mailbag: If it
weren’t for teenagers, some of us
would never realize our shortcom-
ings as parents.

......point to ponder: All the

hullabaloo about more money for
better education, for better schools, q
etc., makes us wonder a bit. Seems
that the legislature and congress
raised wages (more money expend-
ed) but there is a lot of doubt as to
whether the quality of government
improved!
-gfr-
......what really matters: It’s not
what we eat but what we digest that
makes us strong; not what we gain
but what we save that makes us rich.
It’s not what we read, but what we
remember that makes us learned;
and not what we profess but what we
practice that really counts.
-gfr-
......from our mailbag: Congress is
a place where someone gets up to
speak, says nothing, nobody listens,
and everyone disagrees.
-gfr-
......more mail: Congress has
made thousands of laws, but has
never improved on the Ten Com-
mandments. And, (not from our
mail, just an observation) We hope
they never try.
-gfr-
......just a thought: If you straddle
the fence, it can’t be denied, you’re a
perfect target from either side.
-gfr-
......and our Old Timer Buddy, who
also turns green on the 17th of Mar-
ch, winds it all up with this toast:
the doctor might never earn a
dollar from you and that your heart w
may never give out. That the ten
toes of your feet might steer you
clear of misfortune. And, we hope,
that before you get much older, you
will hear a better toast than this
one.” ‘nuff said!
