Tom Bates to direct
Community Chorus
Tom Bates is the artistic
director/conductor of the
Baytown Community
Chorus for the fall season.
With 17 years in music
education in the field of
public education, Bates
brings a wealth of experi-
ence to the Community
Chorus. He has sung with
the Jacksonville Symphony
chorus, The River City
Band and the Jacksonville
Beach Pops Orchestra, die
Jacksonville Lyric Opera
Company, Orlando Opera
Company, Bach Festival
Chorus of Orlando, Fort
Lauderdale Opera Com-
pany and Sinfonia Chorus
of Honda.
Bates is employed by die
Goose Creek school district
as choral director for
Robert E. Lee High School. His REL students have received
superior ratings in solo and ensemble, Madrigal Singers, con-
cert and sight-reading contests and have participated in the
All-American Music Classic Contest in San Antonio.
Bates earned a bachelor of arts degree Bom Newberry Col-
lege, where he majored in music education. He also studied at
East Strasbourg State College with the internationally-known
Fred Waring and at Jacksonville College, where he woriced on
a master’s degree in music educatioa
Before coming to Baytown, Bates directed, designed and
produced many musical and theatrical presentations, including
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Babes in Toyland, Pajama
Game, Sweet Charity, The Importance of Being Earnest,
Camelot, The Sound of Music, Oliver, Music Man, Hello Dolly
and Fiddler on the Roof.
Hie Baytown Community Chorus is a volunteer organiza-
tion meeting in Auditorium II at Lee College every Monday
from 7 to 9 p.m.
Anyone interested in joining may contact Jim Lard at

The fall concert will be held Nov. 21 at St. Marie’s United
Methodist Church. No admission will be chaiged.

Forum on Crisis Center
An open forum will be held to
discuss the newly formed Crisis
Pregnancy Center of the Bay-
town area at 7:30 p.m. Thursday
at the Cedar Bayou Community
Building, 7711 Highway 146.
The center is being formed
under the leadership of the
Christian Action Council (a
National Christian Organiza-
tion) and local concerned citi-
zens.
The Crisis Pregnancy Center
will provide alternatives to
abortion to young women who
have a “crisis pregnancy.” It
will also provide counselors to
talk with the jnothers and doc-
tors for prenatal and pediatric
care.

Trinity Valley
leaders to meet
Leadership Trinity Valley, with sponsors in Chambers and Liberty
Counties, will be among the participants in the a Texas leadership
program tailored for smaller cities and rural communities.
Scheduled to begin Jan. 8 with a retreat, the curriculum will in-
clude such topics as basic leadership skills, motivation, communica-
tions, team building, problem solving, conflict management, eco-
nomic trends, community assessment, and strategic planning for
economic development.
Representatives from the public and private sector have been
meeting since late 1989 to explore a program comparable to leader-
ship training programs available in the m^jor cities,
Leadership Trinity Valley sponsors include the Anahuac Area
Chamber of Commerce, Chambers County Extension Program
Council, Gulf States Utilities, Liberty-Dayton Area Chamber of
Commerce, Liberty County Extension Program Council, West
Chambers County Chamber of Commerce and Winnie Area Cham-
ber of Commerce.
Plans call for the sessions to be held twice monthly during the live
month period with graduation in June of 1994.
Audiovisual materials, speakers, and field trips are incorporated
into the program curriculum to create an exciting approach to the
learning experience.
Trinity participants will be chosen from applications received. A
fee of $150 will be due after participants have been notified of their
selection. A limited number of partial scholarships will be available
for applicants who need financial assistance. Application forms may
be had at the office of any of die sponsoring organizations.
