Summertime is synonymous with vaca-
tioiis. You’re all packed; you’ve cancelled TAKE TIME BEF
the newspaper delivery and put all the garbage belongings from I
cans in die garage. Though it may seem log-
ical to do these things before you go away,
hiding signs of everyday activity can make
your house vulnerable to theft. According
to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau
of Justice Statistics, more than 2 million bur-
glaries were reported in 2000. Law enforce-
ment officials have also found that home bur-
glaries increase during the summer months,
specifically July and August, because of
warmer weather and vacationing homeowners.
Before you head off for some R and R, pre-
pare your home to prevent headaches on
your return. Here’s how to keep your home
safe while you are out of town:
* Give your contact information to a
neighbor. Have him bring in mail and news-
papers and occasionally check on the
house . Or, ask the police to look in on your
home while you are away.
* Leave a locked-car in the driveway, or let

a neighbor park his in yours. This way, it
will look like you’re at home.
* To give the house a “lived in look,” leave
a garden rake, hose and other tools in the
backyard. But lock up any tools that a thief
would use to help him break into your home.
* Use hirers insicfe die house for lamps, radios
and television sets. The noise will deter any-
one prowling around outside the house from
coming in.
* Unkempt lawns are a sign no one is home.
Arrange to have the lawn mowed as need-
ed while you are away.
* It’s summertime. If you were home, you’d
want to bask in some sunshine. Before you
leave, partially open drapes and shades.
* Hide cash, jewelry and important papers
in a safe deposit box, or leave them with a
neighbor. Don’t leave such items in the bed-
room— that’s the fireV place thieves will
look.
* Lower the volume on your phone ringers
so outsiders won’t hear the unanswered rings.
Don’t greet callers on your answering machine
with a message saying you are out of town.
If you can, erase messages from your answer-
ing machine while you’re away tyou can delete
messages remotely on most phones) so the
“beep” is short. |
