State board backs stronger course load
AUSTIN (AP) — The State Board of Education
endorsed a tougher high school course load Friday
to better prepare students for jobs or college.
The stronger course work won’t be required for
graduation. But school districts’ accreditation
could be affected eventually by the number of stu-
dents in the recommended program.
Education Commissioner Lionel “Skip” Meno,
who recommended the course guidelines, said stu-
dents shouldn’t have to give up any outside
activities.
“I have a daughter who’s in 9th grade this year,”
he said. “She’s in marching band, and she is going
to play basketball, and she’s taking exactly this
kind of a program.”
The recommended program has 24 credits, all
but three in “core” courses, while the minimum
program has 21, including seven electives.
To complete the recommended program, stu-
dents would need a credit in computer science, one
in fine arte and three in a foreign language — none
of which is required in the minimum program. The
recommended program also includes an extra cre-
dit each in social studies and science.
Meno said students qould earn credits by testing
out of subjects. Some students already are enrolled
in advanced programs similar to the one recom-
mended by the board.

Questions & Answers
about grief recovery*
Q. My brother’s wife died
recently. He seems to be trying
to drown his sorrows with alco-
hol, although he did not drink
before. How can I help him?
A Trying to cover-up the painful
feelings of loss with drugs or alco-
hol can only delay a normal grief
process. For most individuals this
behavior leads to undesirable
complications. Offer to assist
your brother by accompanying
him to organizations or individu-
als (his family doctor) where help
can be found and appropriate
referrals made.
