for retirement decade ago

Lawson A. Hankins Jr., son of Dr. and Mrs. L.A. Hankins,
completes basic aviation training at Santa Ana, Calif.
Lawrence Bourge, layman at First Baptist Church, Goose
Creek, speaks at the Baptist Church in Cedar Bayou on Massey-
Tompkins Road.
In 1953
Jean Froneberger writes a feature story about Mrs. Chowning
O’Dell, who began her teaching career in 1918.
Eddie Gray, Texas Aggie from Baytown, attracts attention
when he ropes a deer. According to a story in the Battalion, cam-
pus newspaper, Gray lassoed a 10-point buck on a ranch near
Navasota.
In 1963
Marsha Harper, freshman drama major at Centenary College,
is chosen a member of the court in the Miss Centenary Pageant.
Donna Mooney is the new president of the Dashiell-Huey
Chapter of the Children of the Confederacy.
Carol Sarver, Robert E. Lee Band twirler, accumulates 25
trophies and 65 medals.
In 1973
Debra Martinez, senior at Robert E. Lee High School, is a
winner in the 1973 National Council of Teachers of English
writing competition. This marks the 15th consecutive year that a
student in the REL department has been so honored, and Debra is
the 20th REL student to win the award.
Services will be held Nov. 15 for Ola M. Krenick, 59, former
operator of Mallory Beauty Salon.
Travis A. Langford, son of Mr. and Mrs. T.C. Langford of
Baytown, is elected a city councilman in Cortlandt, N.Y. He is a
1959 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School.
Six school buses will be used to help transport fans to the Gan-
der-Ranger game.
Mrs. R.N. Jones of Baytown will appear before a U.S. Senate
subcommittee hearing in Washington to speak on behalf of
proposed legislation to help hemophilia victims.
In 1983
Johnny Clark, superintendent of the Goose Creek district since
1969, will retire at midterm of the 1984-85 school year.
Randall Gerard Stasick of Beach City is killed in a two-car
accident on Farm Road 1405.
The Dwight Lohkamp lawn at 411 Rollingwood is selected as
Yard of the Month by the Lakewood Garden Club.
Norma Williams takes office as president of the Tri-City
Grandmothers Cub No. 902.
Jean Kleypas is the newly elected Valentine sweetheart of
Preceptor Zeta Chi Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.
Mayor Allen Cannon congratulates head football coaches Bill
Bundy of Ross S. Sterling and Ron Kramer of Robert E. Lee for
their teams’ successes.

’43: Narrow escape for FDR, joint chiefs

; Fifty years ago, on Nov. 14, 1943, President Franklin D.
Roosevelt and his joint chiefs narrowly escaped disaster in the At-
lantic while sailing to the Tehran conference aboard the U.S. battle-
; ship Iowa. An escort ship, the William D. Porter, accidentally fired a
live torpedo at the Iowa, but the torpedo exploded harmlessly in the
Iowa’s wake.
On this date, in 1851, Herman Melville’s novel “Moby Dick” was
published in the United States.
In 1881, Charles J. Guiteau went on trial for assassinating Presi-
dent Garfield. Guiteau was convicted and hanged the following year.
In 1889, inspired by Jules Verne, New York World reporter Nellie
Bly, also known as Elizabeth Cochrane, set out to travel around the
world in less than 80 days. She succeeded, making the trip in 72
days.
In 1922, the British Broadcasting Corp. began its domestic radio
service.
In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed the Philip-
pine Islands a free commonwealth.
In 1940, during World War II, German planes destroyed most of
the English town of Coventry.
In 1943, Leonard Bernstein, the 25-year-old assistant conductor of
the New York Philharmonic, made his debut with the orchestra
when he filled in for the ailing Bruno Walter prior to a nationally'
broadcast concert.
In 1968, Yale University announced it was going co-educational.
In 1969, Apollo X3I blasted off for the moon from Cape Kennedy
