Marfan’s syndrome concerns reader
Long, slender fingers, aneurisms, other symptoms a sign of potentially deadly disorder
DEAR DR. GOTT: My 4-
year-old granddaughter has long
fingers and is complaining of
joint aches and headaches.
I don’t want to frighten her
parents but I question Marfan’s
syndrome and would like infor-
mation on the subject.
DEAR READER: Marfan’s
syndrome is an inherited disor-
der of many of the body’s
organs, marked by increased
height, thin and long fingers,
deformity of the breastbone
(sternum), loose joints, flat feet,
spinal curvature and a high
arched palate.
More severe cases are marked
by displacement of the eyes’

lenses, weakness of arterial
walls, problems with the heart’s
valves, and cysts in the lungs.
The severity of the syndrome
varies widely.
Persons with mild Marfan’s
(such as Abraham Lincoln) are
barely affected.
The most serious forms, how-
ever, are associated with prema-
ture ill-health and death because
of aortic aneurisms or heart
infections.
In many cases, these defective
tissues can be replaced with
prosthetic devices.
Joint pains and headaches are
not a part of Marfan’s syndrome.
If you’re concerned about
your granddaughter, check with
her pediatrician for further
information.
Marfan’s syndrome is diag-
nosed by the appearance of the
patient.
DEAR DR. GOTT: How long
does it take for liquid that is
swallowed to reach the kidneys?
DEAR READER: In a well-
nourished, well-hydrated person
without circulation problems or
kidney disease, swallowed fluid
should reach the kidneys within
three to five minutes.
The major delay is the time it
takes for fluid to be absorbed
through the intestinal wall.
So, if this process were
encumbered for some reason,
such as the presence of food in
the stomach, the absorption of
the fluid might be prolonged.
DEAR DR. GOTT: Can you
provide information on an
injection called dexametha-

sone?
My doctor gave me this for a
pinched nerve in my back.
DEAR READER: Dexam-
ethasone is a steroid — a high-
powered cortisone.
It reduces inflammation and is
often injected to alleviate cer-
tain types of backache caused
by swollen, inflamed or pinched
nerves.
Dexamethasone is a good
drug, although it shares the side
effects of cortisone — such as
brittle bones, diabetes, cataracts
and so forth — if used for long
periods.
Therefore, short term therapy
— such as injections
more appropriate than contin-
ued use.
Your doctor appears to be fol-
lowing a reasonable and cus-
tomary approach to your back
problems.
