Solomon Barrow Chapter members
attend 100th annual DRT convention
Members of the Solomon
Barrow Chapter, Daughters of
the Republic of Texas, attended
the 100th annual DRT conven-
tion in San Antonio.
Those who attended were Eva
Smith, Joan Ramsey, Cynthia
Thomas, Henrietta Jorden, Dis-
trict IX representative, Ezmon
Dunn, Hazel Bays, LaNell King,
Gloria Ellis and Pauline
McCullough.
President general June
Franklin Naylor of Odessa
presided over the assembly of
members from 10 state districts.
The formal opening of the con-
vention was held at the Alamo
with a memorial service con-
ducted by Chaplain General
Mary Kathryn Briggs.
Dorothy Penshom presided
over the “Processional of DRT
History” which was a tribute to
past presidents general. Centen-
nial chairman Nell Hoover gave
the welcoming address and then
members attended a garden sup-
per. Coordinator of the-centen-
nial events at the Alamo was
first vice president Margaret
Jackson.
During the historical evening
events, presided by historian
general Thelma Youtz, presi-
dent Eva Lee Smith and other
chapter presidents were intro-
duced and honored. Mrs. Youtz
presented Arthur Chavason,
seventh-grade student of Pat
Kana at Baytown Junior School,
with the outstanding Texas His-
tory Student Award.
NAMES & NOTES
Five students from the Bay-
town area were among candi-
dates for graduation from Ste-
phen F. Austin State University
during spring commencement
ceremonies.
They include Christopher
Braden Woodall, bachelor of
science in mathematics; Becky
Edens Clayton, bachelor of
business administration in man-
agement; Robin Denis Gross,
bachelor of science in elemen-
tary education; Susan Diane
McHenry, bachelor of science
in elementary education; and
Kimberly Ann Thorn, bachelor
of science in biology.
Maura Maple and Jana
Reddin, both of Baytown, have
been named to the bean’s List at
Austin College for the 1991
spring term.
