Sterling boys take title at
district polo tournament
By John Element
of The Baytown Sun
And this was only the district
tournament.
The Sterling boys water polo
team did everything but tear the
hearts out of their fans Saturday
as they won the district tourna-
ment, defeating Clear Brook 9-8
at the Sterling pool.
The Rangers had beaten Clear
Brook a few times before, serving
as a confidence booster for the
favorites, but it became difficult
to tell who played with more con-
fidence as the match
continued.This one was a nail-
biter. But it didn’t start out that
way.
The Rangers were down 3-0
quickly in the first quarter, but it
was obvious the normal Ranger
attack had not commenced.
Sterling coach Mac McDonald
called a time-out to get his strug-
gling team in the game.
“He told us to get the defense
going,” Sterling’s Jeremy Evard
said. “He said we needed to get
Dur shots up higher because their
goalie was getting everything low.
But I was just waiting unti1 the
second quarter when he got to the
deep end. xi iuraea out Tie was a
shallow-end goalie and he
Jvouldn’t do as well in the deep
fend.”
• The Rangers opened up the
second quarter with four unan-
swered goals by Evard, Wilbert
Fontenot (2) and Dusty: Hayden.
The place was a madhouse with
Sterling owning a 4-3 lead, but
that’s the way they like it around
here.
“That helps to hear all that
noise,” Evard said. “It pumps you
up. At the same time, if the other
team’s crowd starts making some
noise, that really inspires you to
get going.”
Clear Brook’s following would
have plenty to cheer about as the
team stayed with Sterling every
step of the way. The score contin-
ued to seesaw, with the Rangers
always holding a one-point edge.
Give credit to Ranger goalie Ryan
Adams, who had some outstand-
ing saves during the middle of the
game.

“This wasn’t one of Ryan’s
best games,” Evard said. “He had
some good saves and great pass-
ing on our counter-attacks. He
also played great in the deep end.
But he is the best goalie in the
state, and when we get there,
that’s where he’ll shine.”
Adams may not have had his
best game, but when he does con-
tribute, it’s usually flashy. With
seconds remaining in the half, the
Clear Brook goalie sent a long
shot, skating off the water right at
Adams, who snared it with one
hand and got his own shot off
right before the buzzer.The game
continued going back and forth
into the fourth quarter, when
After another Adams save, Evard
ran the clock down and sent Clear
Brook on its way.
“We were real surprised it was
that close,” Evard said. “Having
beaten them before, we thought
they would come in figuring on
getting beat. But they surprised
everyone and played with a lot of
confidence.
“We won because of our
defense, and because guys that
don’t normally star had great
games. (Dusty) Hayden was defi-
nitely one of those.”
The Rangers head into the
Regional Tournament next week-
end as the No. 1 seed and will
take on Strake Jesuit Thursday.
Strake has also been beaten at the
hands of the Rangers
“I think we can win that one,”
Evard said. “Our main focus is to
win state, so we’re going to be
playing everyone tough. Our main
competition is Humble, and I
think they’ve lost a couple of
players. And we know their
strengths and weaknesses, so
we’ll be ready.”
The Sterling girls also had
success, getting the third seed at
this week’s regional tournament at
RSS with an 8-6 victory over
Tournament champions
The Baytown Bombers soccer team won the title at the recent Texas City
Tournament, going 3-0 in the Under-12 division 2 blue level. Front row, from left:
Brandon Cather, Tommy Edwards III. Second row: Garrett Boisture, Patrick Page,
Michael Kuntz, Jose Ovando, Blake Carpenter, Alan Lomax. Third row: Michael Cox,

Fontenot got his third ejection and
had to leave the game. He fin-
ished with three goals, but more
importantly, he finsished mid-way
in the fourth quarter.
“(Fontenot) thought he had
some bad calls,” Evard said.
“When he had two ejections, we
knew Clear Brook would go after
him pretty hard. We were lucky it
happened in the fourth. But
everyone picked it up and and
kept our energy going.”
Clear Brook’s Paul Stus, who
had three goals in the game, tied
the score at 8-8 with two minutes
remaining, but even with one
scoring monster out of the game
in Fontenot, the Rangers still had
Evard, and with only minutes
left, he would be the ‘Montana’
the Rangers needed.With less
than 1:30 to go, Chet Cotten hit
Evard on the left side, and Evard
connected to make the score 9-8.
Clear CreeK. Arison mown and
Megan Allen each had three goals
for RSS, with Stephanie
Domingue had 12 saves in goal.
The Lee Gander boys also com-
peted in the tournament, ending
their season with a 14-2 loss
Saturday to La Porte.
This team is young, though,
and with time and patience from
Coach Robert Meyer, should soon
contend for a district title.
“This has been a great year for
the team,” Meyer said. “The pro-
gram is moving in the right direc-
tion and the kids are doing great.
“Finishing 1-2 in the tourna-
ment is a great sign that we are
finally playing on the same level
as the great teams in our district.”
Brian Turner scored both
Gander goals and Danial Jenkins
had 10 saves. Meyer said Garrett
Mohnke also played well for the
Ganders..
Around the horn...
Uncharacteristic is under-
stating the obvious lack of
yards attained by Illy Allen in
the last two games. La Porte
allowed four and Port Arthur
only 17. Then again, Allen
only carried eight times
against Jefferson, about 14
carries under his average. It
would seem that the tailback
cannot get a break out of any
of this. If he’s gaining 100
yards in die game, he’s prob-
ably carrying the offensive
load; if he’s getting four and
17 yards a game, he’s not
being called on near enough.
Through it all, Allen
remains upbeat but quiet (he
says being interviewed is bor-
ing). And that’s fine. Regard-
less of how many yards he
gains, I still hear the same
thing being said in every press
box I’m in when the Rangers
are on the road.
“That’s guy’s faster than..”
and they fill in the blank with
anything thought of at the
moment If they ask me who
he is, I don’t tell them. Allen
probably would want it that
way, and besides, you don’t
have to know who someone is
to be able to sit back and
enjoy...
FYI: What happens if the
big guns in district volleyball
end up in a three-way tie for
first?
A three-way finish would
prompt officials to look at the
head-to-head competition to
see who beat wno. Hoe’s
John
Element
something interesting. In the
first half of die season, Deer
Park beat Lee, which beat
Sterling, which beat Deer
Park. Clearly there is no way
to determine the district win-
ner out of that. Is the trend
continuing in the second half
of the season? Deer Park has
already beaten Lee for the
second time — at Lee. If the
other two matches happen the
same way, it might be unpre-
cedented, but it definitely will
end up making one of these
coaches angry.
The next deciding factor
would be a three-team playoff,
with a coin flip deciding who
plays who first, and where.
Well I’ve got a better idea.
Have a three-team playoff at a
neutral site. But the team that
scores die most points is not
necessarily the team that wins
the district. Notice another
current trend this year Lee
didn’t play Deer Park any-
thing like they did Sterling,
Sterling didn’t play half as
well against Lee as they did
Deer Park and the Lady Deer
were just a little off against
Sterling. How about the team
that straws up and plays as
they are capable wins the
tournament?...
Sterling volleyball coach
Nadine Home is hopeful going
into the Lady Rangers’ match
tomorrow at Deer Park. The
coach acknowledges the teams
who seem to be heading for
the end of the season neck-
and-neck, but she does offer a
reminder for those who have
not noticed.
“La Porte’s playing real
well right now,” Home said.
“They might surprise some
people down the stretch.”
Which might open up an
advantage that one of the top
three teams needs to take over
first place. But Home’s not
waiting on that.
“I’ll wait until the last game
is over to see who’s where,”
she said...
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE?
Sterling tennis coach Jan
Strubbe doesn’t care much for
playing under die lights any-
way, but when the Sterling-
Lee match went into the late
evening, the coach had to turn
on die tennis court lights her-
self. Strubbe felt a shock sou
straight up her arm as she tried
the switch, which made her a
bit angry.
“We’re a 5A school,” she
said. “The facilities are so bad,
the funding is so bad — it’s
ridiculous.”
