Baseball and barbecue
Baytown East Little League board members David Eckerman, Tessie Cox, Kay Morris and
: johnny Walker and players John Eckerman, Beh Cox and Patrick Morris are eager for
Little League season’s opening day Saturday. The festivities will begin at 9:30 a.m. with
ceremonies honoring present and past members of the U.S. armed services. Guest of
honor will be serviceman John HerrincJtQ’n, who was wounded in the Persian Gulf. He will
throw out the first ball for the opening game. Barbecue dinners will be served from 11 a.m.
to 5 p.m. at 1500 N. 1Qth. For more information, call 428-1871. If games are rained out, the
'opening day will be. held April 13.

Aid pledges grow for. Kurds
NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) —
/Pledges of humanitarian aid
grew for Iraqi Kurds escaping,
retaliation by Saddam Hussein’s
,-army, and the world Community
assailed the Baghdad govern-
ment for alleged atrocities in
putting down the Kurdish
rebellion. -
■ The United Nations was ex-
pected to vote Friday on a resol-
ution condemning Iraq’s mili-
tary onslaught against its Kurd-
ish minority as a threat to
intcmatipnal peace and security.

Sir David Hannay, spoke of
“hundreds of thousands of bed-
raggled, bootless, freezirig peo-
ple being driven across the
mountains of Iraq by tanks, heli-
copter guhships and so on.”
Iraq has largely. crushed
Kurdish rebels in the north and
Shiite Moslem insurgents in the
south who sought to topple Sad-
dam after the Gulf War ended in
a ceasc:fire Feb. 28.
Government officials and pro-
testers in several Western coun-
tries pleaded for international ef-
forts to help the fleeing'Kurds.
Britain and Sweden on Thursday
pledged a combined total of
$36.3 million in aid.
Ozal said 100,000 Iraqi Kurd-
ish refugees were already in
Turkey and another 150,000
were at its borders. That.number
could' grow to 600,000 in the
next 10 days, according to
Turkey’s semi-official Anatolia
news agency.
Ozal said his country could
not cope with the flood without
help. Turkish military officials
said at least 400 more troops had
been sent to the border to pre-
vent Kurdish refugees front
entering.
In Iran, 40,000 Kurds crossed
into Azerbaijan province, one of
two bordering Iraqi Kurdistan;
according to the official Islamic
Republic News Agency. Many
