Ace Reid visits
The Llano News
Ace Reid, creator of the
Cowpokes cartoon series carr-
ried each week in The Llano
News, stopped by the news-
paper office last Wednesday to
say "Howdy” and get re-
aquainted with the new pub-
lisher, WalWT Buckner, and
his family.
Reid also visited with long-
time publisher of the News,
Hal Cunningham, while in
Llano. Reid was accompanied
by John Erickson, who is
currently planning a biography
of the cartoonist.
The following is a news
release received by the News
following Reid's Llano visit.
(Electra, Texas) Ace Reid,
nationally-known artist and
creator of the Cowpokes car-
toon series, came home this
week and visited the ranch
country where he grew up.
. Reid was born in the little
Panhandle town of Lelia Lake
in 1925 but spent most of his
youth on his father's ranch
near Electra.
It was on the ranch that he
began sketching the cowboys,
horses, and ranch scenes that
would later make him Ameri-
ca’s best known western artist.
Reid's self-syndicated car-
toon series appears in 500
newspapers and his calendars
and books have sold in the
millions.
When Reid left Wichita
County in 1952 and moved to
Kerrville, he had a wife, a car.
and a dream of becoming a
famous artist, even tough he
had received almost no formal
training.
Now, three decades later,,
he has come back to Wichita
County to relive his early
years. "It’s a kind of Roots,"
says Reid, "an old cowboy
coming home.”
Reid is traveling with Pan-
handle author John R. Erick-
son, who is gathering material
for a book on Ace Reid, to be
published by Maverick Books
in September of 1984.
"I want to see where Ace
came from," said Erickson,
the author of seven books and
hundreds of articles and mem-
ber of the Texas Institute of
Letters. "His story is the
Great American Dream. A kid
walks off a ranch in Wichita
County and becomes a natio-
nal celebrity."
Erickson says that even the
people who see Ace Reid's
cartoons every week don’t
realize how good he is.
“People don’t stop to think
about it, but Ace is a great
artist,” the Perry ton native
notes. “And probably no one
alive today has had a greater
impact on his times than Ace
Reid.”
Reid and his wife Madge,
also of Electra, now make their
home on their ranch north of
Kerrville, where they manage
the various businesses that
they have spawned by Ace’s
CARTOONIST ACE REID was In Llano last week visiting
the Llano News. Reid, from Kerrville, stopped by to say
"Howdy” and thank the News for running his western
cartoons. Visiting In front of the News office was Gene
Buckner, News advertising director; Reid; recently retired
News publisher Hal Cunningham; and John Erickaon, a
friend of Reid and book publisher-author from Perryton.
THE
work.
Erickson is excited about
this new writing project. "Ace
is a marvelous character and a
true original. A talent like his
comes along only once in a
lifetime, and 1 am honored to
be the one who does his
biography."
Also traveling with Ace will
be photographer Kristine
Erickson, the author’s wife,
and several local men who
grew up with Reid.

Last week could very well be
listed on the calendar as
"Woman's Liberation Week”
as all of the mothers in the
community sent their little
people back to the tender care
of the school for another nine
months, kicked off their shoes,
took off their girdles, heaved
sighs of relief, and collapsed.
Meanwhile, the teachers,
not nearly so thrilled over the
situation, pulled their hair and
try to control their tempers' as
they endeavor to whip another
class into some semblance or
order and then get down to hte
order and then get down to the
business of smarting them up
a bit.
It’s kind of like the farmer
who was admonished by a
preacher for beating his mule
over the head with a two-by-
four. The preacher recom-
mended kindness.
"That’s true, preacher,"
said the farmer, "But first
you’ve got to get the mule’s
attention.

And, by the way, Llano is
furntunate to have an excellent
school system. One of the best
testimonies to that is the fact
that there haven't been any
loud hassles going on up
there. The public schools are
one of the most sensitive
institutions in any town, and
when you don't hear any big
flap about them you can be
sure that everything is running
smoothly.

The Llano Yellowjackets
took an easy 28-0 victory over
the Mason Punchers in their
opening game Friday night,
with everybody getting to
play. Mason traditionally has
been the season-opening thorn
in the Jackets’ side, “quite
frequently upsetting their ap-
ple cart. Perhaps the opener
was a happy omen for the '83
season.

The question you'll hear
from everybody this week is
“Where did you go for Labor
Day?” Well, The Wanderer
has always thought that Labor
Day is the best time in the
world not to go anywhere.
They were roosting under
every mesquite tree around
the lakes with everything from
high-powered recreational ve-
hicles to tents and sleeping
bags, and now they’re all
home with blistered backs,
covered with ticks and chig-
gers, and if they’re lucky, only
a dented fender or two, lying
to their friends about what a
wonderful time they had. The
Wanderer will wait until the
excitment dies down and then
take Hazel on a trip some-
where where it’s cool, and
everybody isn’t trying to get
there at once.
