Duval County Claims
Brother denied job
Dear Editor,
My brother applied for the job position of head coach for the B1SD.
As a student at BJHS and BHS he gave all he had for his Alma
Mater. He excelled in all three events, football, basketball and track.
Injured and all he continued to give himself. He, one of a few, was a
participant at a trjtck and field state meet during his school years.
A product of this town he returns 21 years later. He meets all the
qualifications for the job but the board members, six out of seven went
not by letters of recommendations or merits but by hearsay, rumors,
and personal grievances to deny him the job on June 12, 1989.
His private life was investigated and again they went by hearsay
and rumors and no proof. Were all other applicants investigated? I
don't think so. 1 may be wrong.
If he made mistakes during his lifetime. Board members and all that
so unjustly denied him, look at your conscience very closely.
Think...haven't you at one time in your life made a mistake?
That applicant was my brother Raul and I am very proud of him. I
feel for him and I am happy to know that he had the guts to be at the
meeting and know who so unjustly denied him a chance to prove
himself.

Appreciates publicity
Dear Editor,
Thank you for the publicity given to the GLO Hispanic Scholarship
Fund in the June 7 issue of the Duval County Picture.
I wish to take this opportunity to corrent an oversight. Another
Duval County resident was inadvertently left out of the article. Debbie
Alvarez (formerly Carbajal), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alonso Car-
bajal of Benavides, has helped organize the fundraising projects of the
GLO Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Together with many other countless
individuals at the General Land Office and Veterans Land Board,
Debbie Alvarez is helping raise themonies for the scholarship.
We, the hispanics at die General Land Office, along with Texas
Land Commissioner Gany Mauro feel great pride in being able to
work together on education issues and issues of equality in Texas.
Thank you for all your help and support.
Dolly Garcia.

Senior trip a success
Dear Editor,
On behalf of the parents of the Class of '89,1 would like to thank
all the people who made the senior trip a wonderful success. The
students, whose behavior was exemplary and who were complimented
by hotel employees at all the different cities we visited; the sponsors
and parent chaperones, Grace Lopez, Mary Lou Guerra, Alma
Gonzalez. Carlos Montemayor, Ofelia Ibarra, Mr. and Mrs. Roel
Garcia, Thelma Montemayor, Carmen Alaniz, Connie Perez, Cora
Carrillo and Emilia Morales, who so unselfishly gave up thier time and
energy to "be there" for the kids during all aspects of the trip; Carla, our
travel agent, and our bus dnvers, especially Elias, who made the lo-
gistcis of our trip possible; and last, but not least, the community at
large, particularly the parents, who supported us in our money-making
projects for four years to make the trip possible.
In closing please contact me if any seniors, chaperones, or sponsors
found or lost some items during the trip. I have established a "Lost and
Found” Center at these numbers. 279-3654 or 256-4187. Pease call for
more information.
