SPORT NOTES
By Coorgo Joel
Groat' Jawiik Swimmer in Schwarts
of Northweetern
. Another great Jewish athlete can
i\ow be proclaimed since the- news
that Albert Schwartz, a student of
Northwestern University is a Jew,
has reached ua through the column*
of the Phi Epsilon Phi Quarterly, a
magazine devoted to the doings of
the members of that fraternity.
Albert Schwartz is one of the out-
standing performers in nautical cir-
cles. He is thl( holder of two world
records and four United States titles
besides being a member of the fast-
est relay team swimming in the
waters of civilized cduntrM.
He made his first world mark last
season when as a member of the
Northwestern Swimming team he cov-
ered forty yards in the time of 17.4
seconds. This splashing act bettered
Johnny Weismuller's mark at 18 sec-
onds flat. A1 has tied the fifty yard
record and has done the hundred in
62.9. Schwartz's favorite distance is
the 220, which distance he has cov-
ered in 8.14 and 2/6.
A1 Schwartz is only at the begin-
ning of his swimimng career. He
broke into fame while swimming for
his college team which ho will cap-
tain next season. {Possessed with
powerful legs and perfect form plus
a minimum of effort Al churns the
water like a “V” botton speed boat, forget!
ciety with a capital “8” has always
reserved this tourney for its own but
the bars are down and they had to
invite a couple of Jewish boys to
show them how the game should be
played.
New Hakoah Teams Open Season
With a Loe.
Nathan Agar combined the best
features of the new Hakoah team and
his own Brooklyn WandeYa the other
night and put them on the field
against the New York Nationals. The
best was not enough and Agar’s com-
bination lost 3-1. The game opened
the 192it-:i0 season and a crowd of
2000 turned out for the twilight
game which started at 0 p.m. It
wasn't very exciting. Schofcld scor-
ed the only Hakoah tally.
Abrame Win. Powar Boat
Champion.hip
F. B. Abrams, driving his 200-
horsepower Kermath boat annexed
the Fountain Hropby, emblematic of
the speed boat title of Great JJouth
Bay, Long Island. This is not Mr.
Abram's first win us he is one of the
leading speed boat racers on Long
Island. The only other Jewish speed
boat enthusiast thut I know of is Sid-
ney Silverman, now of Los Angeles.
The captain ofthe Washington and
his name is 1). Jacobs
Lest you
He is nearly six feet in height with
unusually broad > shouldefla, u thin
waist and big heavy legs. He will
be a candidate for Olympic honors
in 193?. And here I've been all
these years trying to get the "low-
down” On the religious affiliations of
Ge'orge Kojac while Al Schwartz hus.
been (foing enough swimming stunts
to gratify anybody.
Goldstein Fight, ns Welterweight
Ruby Goldstein, once pride of the
East Side and Jewish-hope for the
lightweight title, is now fighting ns
a welterweight. The Jewish boy en-
tered the ring the other night weigh-
ing 143 pounds, the heaviest he has
ever been"- Added weight has not
harmed Ruby. He knocked out
Cuddy Do Marco, u Pittsburgh gen-
tleman in the fourth round of one
of those ten-round features. The bat-
tle was very one-sided. Ruby doing
all the punching. Any time Ruby
can do ail the punching ho wins,
which, 1 must admit, is not so un-
usual. If Ruby could only take it?
He certainly can sock.
Berg Win. Again
Jackie Berg, the English windmill
gave another imitation of u perpet-
ual motion machine for five rounds
or unj.il his opponent, Joe Trahan
had been knocked to the canvas and
made to stay there. The crowd went
wild. They can't get over the fact
that here is a fighter ^that really
fights.
But I wonder how wise Jackie
really is? He gives the fans their
money’s worth hut no fighter can go
in wide open nnd trade punches like,
he does without absorbing an awful
lot of punishment. It’s my guess
that Jackie will last, a few years more
and then to the' henp. He will be
lucky if he is not permanently dis-
abled.
Al Singer to Meet Kid Chocolate
Al Singer, and Kid Chocolate will
meet in New York City on August
29 for about $40,000. Two faster
and prettier fighting little fellows
couldn’t have been gotten to appear
in one ring. If past performances
count for anything this should he the
best fight of the current fistic sea-
son with the odds on Chocolate to
win. I think the dark boy is too
smart for his Hebrew opponent.
Strange as that sounds, it’s so be:
cause Chocolute has had mu^h more
experience and, say what you will,'
he is a better fighter. It would have'
been wiser to let Singer wait a year
or so. Al is growing fast and will
soon be a lightweight. Of course if
he wins he will be in the big money
but it's a long chance to take, espe-
cially after after Al’s knockout at
the hands of Fernandez.
RumpnT from the- coast are to the
effect that Yale Okun is a rejuve-
nated fighter. It has happened since
his marriage. If Yale gets anywhere
with their hands.
