Word haa ju»t reached here of the
recent graduation nt the Hadaaaah
Nursin’ Training School in JerUsa-
iem, Palestine, which at. the name
time was an occasion for the cele-
bration of the tenth anniversary of
the founding of the institution by
lladassah, the Women's Zionist Or-
ganization of America, and of the
coming of tlic Zionist Medical Unit
to Palestine.
Eighteen Palestinian girls became
graduate nurses, having completed a
three-year course such as is required
in New York Stwtc for 'schools of
nursing In addition to this regular
course the students are also taught
fnidwefery and public health ' work.
The gniduation attracted a large
audience, including many of the lead-'
ing figures in public life in Palestine
Mils Henrietta . Szold, founder of
lladuisuh and now a member of the
Palestine Zionist Executive in Jeru-
salem, acted as chairman. A number
of uddresM's were made, which re-,
counted the history* of the Nurses’
Training School and its influence on
health conditions in Palestine. With
these eighteen graduates the total'
of lladassah trainednurses is 11*1,
of which fit! lire in the service of the
lladaisali Meilical (Irgunii’atioii . or
affiliated institutions:

The school is the only one of it*
kind in Palestine.? It has set a high
standard for its pupils. They are re-
quired to have at least a “gymnasi-
um” education, which is somewhat
more advanced than the American
high school training, or else must
pass nn examination of the Hebrew
Hoard of Education. They must be
able to read and write Hebrew, since
that is the only language used in in-
struction, and have a- fundamental
knowledge of Latin. A scries of
text books are now being published
(or use in teaching. The first, which
was published last yeur, is “The Eye,”
by I)r. A rich Keigenlmum, chief op-
thnlmologist»*f the lladassah Medi-
cal Organization. A book on diseas-
es of children, by Dr. A. Levinson,
of Chicago, will appear soon.
The Nurses' Training Mhdol is at-
tached to tiic Rothschild Hospital, one
of four maintained by Hadgssuh. In
these years the school mis exerted
a remarkable influence, not only in
Palestine hut throughout the Near
East. The thorough training and ex-
perience in public health work which
the nurses receive has yearly increas-
ed demands for them in neighboring
countries as well as lYi all parts of
Palestine. Recently, when an infant
welfare station was opened in Cairo,
Egypt, a lladassah nurse was placed
in charge. A scholarship fund pro-
vides lor post -graduate work in
America for nurses trained in the
Jerusalem school.
