adult literacy program recognized
The San Patricio County Adult
Literacy Council (SPCALC) Board of
Directors and Executive Director
Linda Medellin, hosted a
“Celebration of Literacy” Fashion
Show & Luncheon on March 24 at
Northshore Country Club in
Portland. Josefina Mora was award-
ed the 2007 San Patricio County
Adult Literacy’s “Student of the Year
Award”.
Mora started the ESL program in
May 2005. She is the mother of a
first grader and a kindergartner. She
was nominated for the award by her
tutor, Hermedies Biel.
Biel wrote, “It was her sense of
responsibility that led her to enroll in
the program in order to be of more
help to her children. She is building
her confidence with her new English
verbal skills by calling and ordering
take-out and ordering food when
they eat out.”
“She reads the stories in the pro-
gram easily and she works diligently
on pronunciation and comprehen-
sion. One of her goals is taking and
passing the written test for her dri-
ver’s license,” added Biel.
Other awards presented were
“2007 Tutor of the Year”, Shirley
Windhorst and SPCALC “Board
Member Service Award”, Pat Voss.
Windhorst resides in Portland and
tutors 12 students once^a week at
W.C. Andrews Elementary. Voss
resides in Odem, is a student tutor, a
Laubach certified tutor trainer, and a
founding member of SPCALC.
Mr. Kippy Edge served as Master
of Ceremony and guest speaker, and
Precinct 2 Commissioner Fred
Nardini captivated the audience with
his first-hand experience with ESL.
All those attending the event were
treated to the many fashions for
men, women and children that can
be found locally in the many shops in
San Patricio County. The fashion
show finale showcased an array of
Bridal Party fashions.
SPCALC was formed in 1996 to
help the adult citizens living and/or
working in San Patricio County with
literacy education. These services
are offered at no charge to the stu-
dent or the tutor through the gener-
ous donations and grants offered by
local citizens, businesses, organiza-
tions, foundations and San Patricio
County. Along with the many volun-
teer hours the tutors give freely, this
program is possible and available in
every city in San Patricio County.

5 pounds of cocaine
seized at traffic stop
DPS Trooper locates drugs under car's hood

A Brownsville man was arrested
near Sinton after a Texas
Department of Public Safety Trooper
located cocaine under the hood of a
vehicle following a traffic stop.
According to Capt. David Doyle of
the DPS Regional Headquarters in
Corpus Christi, the Commercial
Vehicle Enforcement Trooper whose
name is being withheld, spotted a
1995 Chevrolet Suburban on
Wednesday, March 28 that appeared
to be speeding as it was traveling
northbound on US 77 between
Odem and Sinton.
The driver did not immediately
stop once the Trooper activated his
emergency lights but appeared to
have taken evasive action by exiting
off US 77 towards Sinton.
After the driver and lone occupant
of the Suburban, Rogelio Garcia, 30,
was approached by the Trooper, a
search was conducted of the traffic

• Joshua Stephen Winkler, 20, of
Fulton, was arrested at the district court-
room after being sentenced to one year in
a state jail facility on the original charge of
possession of a controlled substance.
April 3
• Caller reported that a truck parked at
a business had been broken into. The
offenders managed to climb a fence to
enter the property and broke out the dri-
ver’s side window on the truck. It
appeared the perpetrator was searching
for a set of keys and ransacked the truck.
Tools were removed and placed on the
ground near the vehicle. At the time the
report was made nothing was said to have
been stolen.
• Santos Rodriguez DeLeon, 40, of
Mathis, was arrested on a warrant for con-
tempt of court - non-payment of child sup-
port after deputies found him hiding in a
closet at a home. Two others were arrest-
ed for hindering apprehension: Denise
Lynn Marez, 22, of Mathis, and Maria
Isabel Hinojosa, 27, also of Mathis.
Hinojosa was also charged with posses-
sion of marijuana - less than two ounces,
after deputies located two glass pipes and
a piece of notebook paper containing
marijuana in her purse.
• Deputies transported two wanted per-
sons from the Nueces County jail after
being arrested there on warrants. Elisha
Maxwell Johnson, 22, of Corpus Christi,
was wanted for driving while license sus-
pended, and Jena Lynn Persinger, 21, of
Alice, was wanted for revocation of proba-
tion on the original charge of theft.
April 4
• Jose Cantu Trevino, 44, of Aransas
Pass, was arrested for assault - threaten-
ing bodily injury.
• Deputies transported two wanted per-
sons from the Harris County jail after they
were arrested there. Miguel Perez, 30, of
Mission, Texas, was arrested on a warrant
for possession of a controlled substance,
and Wendy Nicole Murphy, 26, of Sinton,
was wanted for retaliation.
April 5
• 8100 block of CR 95C, Taft - 8:08 a.m.
A caller reported that someone drove their
vehicle through his front yard and did
“donuts” during the evening hours.
• Justin Ray Herrera, 22, of San
Antonio, was arrested on outstanding
warrants out of Bexar County for driving
while license invalid, burglary and motion
to revoke probation on the original charge
of assault - causing bodily injury.
• Jerry F. Olivares, 39, of Sinton, was
arrested for indecency with a child.
• A complainant reported that a vehicle
hit his fence after he witnessed an orange
and white Chevy Blazer lose control in a
mud puddle. The vehicle hit the fence,
knocking down several fence posts and
the barbed wire.
• 7300 block of CR 2347, Sinton - 2:41
p.m. Deputies responded to a report of
burglary of a habitation after a mobile
home was broken into and several items
were taken. Stolen were a stereo and
speakers, eight fishing rods and reels, a
computer printer and a jar full of coins.
April 7
• A caller reported criminal mischief
after noticing a fence was tom down along
San Patricio County property. It was
reported that an unknown subject(s)
appeared to have been driving north-
bound on CR 60B, approximately one-half
mile from Old San Patricio, and lost con-
trol before going through a six-strand
barbed wire fence. Nearly 200 feet of
fencing on the Old McGloin Ranch was
destroyed.

Located under the hood were sev-
eral packages wrapped in metal tape
that contained 2,400 grams of
cocaine. Capt. Doyle reported the
driver attempted to conceal the ille-
gal drugs inside the intake manifold.
“This Trooper is so good at this
(drug seizures) that he knows partic-
ular locations in various vehicles
where drugs are typically hidden,”
said Capt. Doyle. “He’s got an
uncanny ability to find the drugs and
can see where an engine compart-
ment or other portion of a vehicle has
been tampered with.”
Garcia was charged with posses-
sion of a controlled substance, a
first-degree felony, and taken to the
San Patricio County jail. If found
guilty, he could face imprisonment in
a state jail for life or for any term of
not more than 99 years or less than
five years, and in addition to impris-
onment, Garcia may be punished by
a fine not to exceed $10,000.
The San Patricio County Department of
Health inspected the following retail food
establishments during the week of April 2-
5. Although the reports at several of these
establishments contain code violations,
the restaurants are required to take imme-
diate corrective action. The health depart-
ment does allow up to 10 days for a retail
food establishment to correct several of
the categorized violations.

scores during the recent inspection peri-
od were:

Mathis Motor Inn & RV Park, Aunt
Jackie’s Sweet Delights and Catering by
Picklesmith in Taft.

New US 181 overpass
near Gregory to open
TxDOT announces area road, lane closures
The Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) Corpus Christi office
has announced several planned lane closures this week due to construction
work in the area. Schedules of closures are subject to change because of
weather, availability of materials and equipment.
US 181 - Gregory
Thursday to Sunday - 24 hours-a-day, southbound US 181 traffic from
Sinton to Corpus Christi will use the new lanes and overpasses at SH 202 in
Gregory. Southbound US 181 traffic from Sinton to Gregory, Rockport or FM
2986 to Portland will need to take the new exit to Gregory.
SH 358 (Padre Island Dr)
Wednesday to Friday - 9 a.m.-4 p.m., westbound Kostoryz off ramp closed
for guardrail work; Thursday and Friday Nights - 9 p.m.-6 a.m., westbound
main lanes closed from Weber off ramp to the Kostoryz on ramp for bridge
work; Wednesday to Friday - 9 a.m.-4 p.m., Kostoryz, Carroll, Weber,
Everhart and Staples - periodic daily turnaround and lane closures at the
intersections

Thursday - 8 a.m.-5 p.m., ramp from Padre Island Dr to southbound I-37
(going towards downtown) will be closed for paving and installation of delin-
eators. Traffic detoured to the Leopard exit and the frontage road to the

Wednesday to Friday - daylight hours, south of Port Aransas at Mustang
Road - the roadway will be reduced to a one way, one lane roadway con-
trolled by flagmen. The lane closure is required for some drainage work in
