Lady Owls softball team strikes the Taft Greyhounds out in first district game Tuesday

The Odem Lady Owls softball
team set a tradition of excel-
lence last year. They finished
their season 14-8-1 after going
four rounds in the playoffs.
The girls began their 2005
season on the same tradition. In
their first district game against
the Taft Lady Greyhounds, the
Lady Owls defeated the ‘Hounds
16-1.
“Pitcher Crystal Garza gave
up one run on two hits in three
innings. She gave up one base
on ball and had six strikeouts.
She is 3-0 in the season,” Coach
Gary Epps said.
Also contributing to the win
were Taft’s four errors and
Odem’s error-free record. Odem
had eight hits while Taft had two
hits. Catching for the Lady Owls
were Ashley Garza and Brianna
Pfluger. Leading the team in
RBIs was Samantha Romero
with four. Following close behind
her were Jessica Soto and
Tiphani Beltran with two each.
The next game is March 4 at
Texas A&M University-Kingsville
at 2 p.m. against Harlingen
South. The game is part of the
Kingsville Tournament.
Following that game, the Lady
Owls will face Alice.
“We are lucky to be returning
our entire infield and outfield,”
Epps said.
The returning starters include:
Ashley Graza as catcher,
Kristina Englebert on first base,
Marissa Barrera on second
base, Priscilla Buendia on third
base, Jessica Soto as shortstop
and outfielders Tiphani Beltran,
Melinda O’Canas and
Bernadette Cavazos.
Three freshmen are newcom-
ers to the team: Marissa Lopez
as pitcher and outfield, Crystal
Garza as pitcher and outfield
and Brianna Pfluger as catcher.
On the junior varsity roster
are: Kayla MacDonald, Dymond
Garber, Janell Morin, Cecilia
Lopez, Krissy Buendia,
D’Andrea Salazar, Arianna Icke, •
Karina Rodriguez, Erika Vela, *
Lindsey Escobar, Samantha
Hoelscher, Tabitha Martinez and
Christina Galvan. Serving as
assistant coach for the ladies is
Dean Ziegel.
