Community swimming
pool to open May 5
In just a few weeks, the gates to
bthe community swimming pool will
open to residents. On Saturday, May
5, swimmers will have the chance to
cool off when the pool opens for the
first time this year. At that time, the
parks and recreation office says the
community pool will only be open on
weekends.
The regular summer swim sched-
ule, when the pool will open its gates
on weekdays will begin on Tuesday,
June 5 and continue through Sunday,
Aug. 26. The summer schedule calls
for the pool to be open Tuesday
through Sunday, from 1 p.m. until
4:45 p.m. each day.

Driscoll Children’s Health Plan
announces free prenatal health edu-
cational baby showers for pregnant
women residing in San Patricio
County. The Cadena de Madres
Project baby showers are offered
monthly in eight communities with
games, prizes and healthy snacks.
While attending the baby showers,
the participant will: learn how to make
healthy choices during pregnancy:
comprehend the advantages of pre-
natal care; understand the complica-
tions that may occur during pregnan-
cy: and learn to recognize signs of
preterm labor.
Driscoll Children’s Health Plan
offers consultations with a registered
dietician for clients with gestational
diabetes at risk for adverse birth out-
comes. The dietician provides meal
planning and nutritional advice.

where the showers will be held

portable building behind the adminis-

4-H youth compete at A&M livestock judging event
Fourteen San Patricio County 4-H
members competed in the District 11
Livestock Judging Contest at Texas
A&M University in College Station on
Saturday, April 21.
Teams included: a Junior team of
Collin Cass, Jared Cullison and
Brooke Sorrells, who placed 3rd; a
Junior team of Jillian Williams, Misty
Martin and Payne Whatley who
placed 6th; and an Intermediate team
of Emily Stroman, Krystal Martin,
Ross Kelley and Hunter Sorrells, that
placed 4th.
Daniel Dohmann judged as an indi-
vidual, and a Senior team of Shelly
Sutton, Luke Vacek, Dana Dohmann
and Elizabeth Craver placed 7th. The
teams were coached by Kyle
McManus and Jeffrey Sorrells.
Also competing at A&M were
Senior Mohair judging teams com-
posed of Keri Loveday, Caitlin
Demmer and Allyssa Kelley placing
2nd, while a team of Karen Fellers,
Lauren Wall and Audra Demmer
placed 1st.
Trent Williams was high-point indi-
vidual in the Intermediate Division.
These teams were also coached by
McManus. The Senior Mohair
Judging teams will compete in the
upcoming State 4-H Roundup in
June.
Public invited to
Annual UMW
Salad Luncheon
The annual Odem First United
Methodist Women’s salad luncheon
will be held Saturday, April 28, from
11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the church’s
fellowship hall, 1309 Haisley. The
public is invited to attend the meal.
The UMW “saladmasters” promise
a wide array of meat, fruit and veg-
etable salads with dessert included.
Tickets are $5 each and guests will
have a choice of dining-in while
enjoying fellowship or making their
own carry-out plate. Door prizes will
also be awarded. All proceeds bene-
fit the UMW Mission Outreach proj-
ects.

Next blood drive at Odem High
School scheduled for May 11
The next Owl Blood Drive is Friday, May 11 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the
Odem High School parking lot. This will be the last blood drive this school
year. Those who show up and give blood - the gift of life - will receive a T-
shirt, a Whataburger coupon and will be registered to win a $100 gift card to
Best Buy. OHS also places donors in a drawing to win a $25 Wal-Mart gift
card.
The last winners for the March 1 blood drive drawing were (at right) Juliana
Salinas and Amber Jardon. Donors are asked to register at the OHS office
with Lilly O’Canas. Anyone who gives blood at another location can say they
want to give credit to Odem High School.

Odem Elementary to hold
donation drive for shelter
In connection with the Week of the
Young Child, April 23-26, Odem
Elementary will hold a donation drive
to assist the Ark Assessment Center
and Emergency Shelter for Youth
located in Five Points.
The charity fosters abused, sexu-
ally abused and neglected children
ages 0-17.
The school will begin collecting
items on Monday, April 23 and con-
clude on Thursday, April 26.
Students and members of the com-
munity may bring donations to the
school’s main office.
Items needed, include: diaper rash
ointment, paper cups, facial tissue,
plastic utensils, diapers of all sizes,
toilet paper, plain white bath towel's,
baby wipes, fitted crib sheets, paper
plates and paper towels.
