of. the natural resources, including
energy during its annual Stewardship
week celebration. The National
Association of Conservation Districts
(NACD) has proclaimed April 29 to
May 6 as Stewardship Week with the
theme Conservation’s Power.
Think about the energy you use
everyday. Does it come from renew-
able or non-renewable energy
sources? Over 92 percent of energy
used today comes from non-renew-
able resources such as petroleum,
natural gas, coal, and uranium. Only
a small fraction of the energy we use
comes from renewable sources. Is
this good stewardship?
What can we do? Take the time to
learn about energy efficiency (using
less energy to perform the same
fuhetion), energy conservation, and
renewable energy. Then put what you
learn into practice. Efficiency and
conservation are key components of
energy sustainability. Simply put, we
need to meet today’s energy needs

Organizers of last Thursday’s
Habitat for Humanity of San Patricio
County “Kick Up Your Heels” dinner
fund raiser are elated after the first-
ever event put the organization in a
financial position to begin plans for its
next home.
More than 400 people from across
the county attended the dinner fund
raiser held at Portland’s Northshore
Country Club, allowing the local non-
profit Habitat for Humanity chapter to
net approximately $25,000 towards
its second project.
“It was a huge success. It was a cel-
ebration for the community to intro-
duce them to Habitat for Humanity and
what it’s all about,” said Mary Garrett,
chairperson of the local HFH board.
Gannett said organizers were nerv-
ous when the ticket sales continued to
climb, hoping that the banquet facility
would accommoctate tie crowd.
Tables were offered for groups rep-
resenting area buelneeaee, munici-
palities and tenfltee. Every city in
San Patricio County was represent-
ed, many of wMch had their elected
officials in attandanos.
Garret says aha and other board
members Imre received numerous
comptinrente fotiowlng last week’s
fund rafter, and twt many can’t wait

Garrett.

ownership of the first home, Garrett
reported.
Habitat for Humanity international
is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian
housing ministry which seeks to elim-
inate poverty housing and homeless-
ness from the world, and to make
decent shelter a matter of con-
science and action.
The organization invites people of
all backgrounds, races and religions
to build houses together in partner-
ship with families in need. Since its
inception in 1976 by Millard Fuller
and his wife, Linda, HFH has built
more than 225,000 houses around
the world, providing more than 1 mil-
lion people in more than 3,000 com-
munities with safe, decent, affordable
shelter.
Garrett says the board of directors
have yet to decide where the second
project will be raised. HFH of San
Patricio County owns a parcel of land
in Taft and has also been offered lots
in both Odem and Sinton.
Once the board secures the
required funding for the next home,
board members will solicit applica-
tions and announce the site of their
next home.
Garrett also said area residents
will soon find donation jars, which
look like homes that are adorned with
the HFH logo, across the county at
various locations.
“We’re planning on a large annual
fund raising event and it will be a dif-
ferent format each year,” said
Garrett.
Volunteers are still needed with the
current project at 908 Fetick Ave. in
Taft. Individuals will be subjected to a
30 to 45 minute safety training film
shown on site, then work can begin.
There are two supervisors on site
each Saturday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
For more information, email Ron
Gonzales, one of the supervisors, at
rdgonzales@aol.com. Better yet just
show up this Saturday and he will be
glad to train volunteers on what is
needed.
Making it ail happen...
Habitat for Humanity of San Patricio County’s first annual dinner fund
raiser, which was held last Thursday at Portland’s Northshore Country
Club, was made possible through the efforts of the organization’s fund
raising committee. Taking time for a quick photo between hosting the
more than 400 attendees are committee members (front, l-r) Bertha Nell
Barth, Sarah Quick, Glenda McKinney, Ron Gonzales, David Aken; (mid-
dle, l-r) Peggy Lacascio, Mary Garrett, Peggy Spooner; (back, l-r) Sandy
Clarkson and Pattie Cass-Strain. Approximately $25,000 was raised at
the event to help the non-profit organization begin plans for the second

Texas, barbecued ribs for the event -

‘They did everything,” said Garrett
of the Mustangs. ‘Their operation out
there (Northshore) was phenomenal.”
San Patricio County Habitat for
Humanity applied for their services in
2005 and were fortunate to have the
Mustangs cook for the fund raiser.
‘They have hundreds and hundreds
of applications each year because
they cook for non-profits from Victoria
all the way down to the Valley,”
Garrett said. “I have never seen a
group so excited about helping oth-
ers as they were.”
Silent and live auctions of various
items, including trips and furniture,
helped to bring in an additional
$9,000 for Habitat for Humanity’s
next housing project.
According to Garrett, Habitat for
Humanity International requires its
affiliates to have funding in place
prior to the construction of any hous-
ing projects. The monies raised last
week put the local organization well
above its half-way mark of the
$60,000 needed for their second
home.
The first home, which is currently
under construction in Taft and will be
occupied by the Valdemar and Pattie
Alaniz family, should be completed
this summer, said Garrett.
Homes are completely constructed
by volunteers and families who are
seeking a HFH residence must
undergo a stringent application
process. Days before the fund raiser,
more than 30 U.S. Navy personnel
from Naval Station ingleside volun-
teered and completed the roofing on
the home. Twenty families applied for
