speakers at a “background"
news conference held by the 15-
company Committee of Ameri-
can Steamship Lines, pointed
out that these U.S. subsidized
lines are building new ships at
the rate of about 17 a year or
about 25 per cent of the total
world production of cargo liners
of “reasonable" size and speed.
Among other things, Nemec
noted that at the start of this
year the subsidized operators
had contracted for a total of
117 Ships costing the companies
more than $700 leaving 179 ves-
sels to be contraflect fqf, prior
to 1975 at a -corprtfate cost of
more than $1.2 billion
