Costume Contest
The Old Fiddler's Festival may
be dead, but its Children's
Costume Contest lives on as part
of "Go Texan Days."
"We've got judges, helpers,
sponsors and even an emcee lined
up," said Glenda Perez in
announcing that the Children's
Costume Contest will continue on
the last Saturday of October -
with one major change:
"The contest will be from 4 to
6 p.m. instead of Saturday
morning as in the past," Perez
said. "Other details and rules
remain the same."
Trophies, courtesy Moore's
Pharmacy and Economy Medical
Rental, will go to the top entrants
in three categories in three age
divisions. Categories are prettiest,
most unusual and scariest. Age
groups are 0-4, 5-8 and 9-older.

A Quinceaneiu Mass was held
last Saturday for Amanda
Matthews, daughter of Malcolm
and Maggie Matthews of Corpus
Christi.
Maggie (Mancias) Matthews
graduated from Odem High School
and Texas A&I University, then
moved to San Diego, Calif., upon
obtaining her teaching degree. The
Matthews family, which recently
moved to Corpus Christi, thought
it most appropriate to return to
the church where Maggie and
Malcolm were married, and where
Amanda was baptized, for the
Quinceanera celebration.
Amanda chose a southern belle
style dress in blush pink for the
occasion. The elegant bodice had
beaded embroidered lace and a
dropped V-waist with short puff
sleeves and a scalloped scoop
neckline. Lace appliques circled
around the full skirt which had a
ruffle flounce and a lace-trimmed
hemline.
The court of young ladies
accompanying Amanda was
Amanda and Amber Aleman,
Monica Lopez, Rosie and Susie
Lopez and Natalie Mancias of
Odem; Sandra Flores of Gregory;
Andrea Romero of Portland; Anna
Zambrano and Selina Silvas of
Corpus Christi; Teresa Trdla of
Mission; Laurie Landridge of San
Marcos, and Alicia and Cecilia
Hasdorff of Austin.
Padrinos who presented
Amanda with special gifts were
Frank and Virginia Chapa, Juan
and Angelita Mancias, Martin and
Yolanda Mancias of Odem; Robert
and Anna Salinas of Corpus
Christi, and Robert and Catarina
Hasdorff of Austin.
Altar servers were Rudy
Pizana, Jason Mancias and A1
Salinas, Amanda's cousins, iravis
.Matthews and David Hasdorff
were liturgical readers.
A reception was held at the
Odem Elementary School Cafeteria
immediately following the Mass.
Junior Miss Valerie Garcia was in
charge of the guest book.
The dinner menu included
came guisada, rice, beans and pico
de gallo. After the meal, all the
guests serenaded Amanda with
the traditional "Las Mananitas"
and Happy Birthday.
Two full sheet cakes were
decorated for the celebration. One
depicted the various activities in
which Amanda was interested.
The other was topped with a pink
cake doll resembling the dress she
wore. The honoree presented each
of the young ladies in her court
with a cake doll which they took
home.
Amanda is a freshman at
Richard King High School. She
plays on a traveling soccer club
and is in the marthing band. After
the marching season, Amanda will
resume piano lessons. She also is
active in the youth group
activities at SS. Cyril and
Methodius Catholic Church in
Corpus Christi.
