San Pat
Soil Disk
Honored
Soil and water conservation
district directors representing
213 Texas Soil and Water
Conservation Districts, attending
the recent 54th annual
conference, recognized the San
Patricio Soil and Water
Conservation District as a Grand
Award winner in the Goodyear
Conservation Awards Program.
The San Patricio District was
selected as a result of a
nationwide competition sponsored
by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber
Company in cooperation with the
National Association of
Conservation Districts.
An independent judging
committee of state agricultural
leaders selected the San Patricio
SWC District on the basis of the
district's accomplishments in soil
and water conservation, according
to Goodyear area sales
representative Ed O'Boyle.
The Grand Award-winning
district received a plaque
recognizing it's achievement
during a presentation before an
audience of some 1,000 SWCD
directors attending the annual
meeting of Texas Soil and Water
Conservation Districts in Austin.

The depleted Pirates lost defensive
mainstays Mondo Gonzales and
Chris Havelka to injuries last
week, and both reportedly are
sidelined for the season.
On offense, the Pirates
managed only 114 yards
themselves, rushing for just 34
on 34 carries. In previous games,
though, Mathis averaged 230
rushing.
Mathis' deepest penetration
was to the Ingleside 35 on its last
possession of the game. In fact,
the Pirates crossed midfield only
three times against the Mustangs.
Odem usually is stingy on
defense, but this year the Owls
have been down-right miserly.
Odem's D has allowed only 84
points this season -- 42 to Goliad
and 43 to the other five foes.
Excluding the Tigers, the Owls
average yielding only one TD a
game rushing.
Mathis began the season in
fine fashion, beating Poteet,
Nixon-Smiley and Laredo
Alexander. Since district play
began, though, the Pirates haven't
won. They fell to visiting Goliad,
33-7, and were edged at West Oso,
21-13.
■ Odem has made a habit of
handling Mathis in recent years,
having the upper hand in four of
the past five seasons. Last year's
21-14 victory, however, gives the
Owls the series edge, 16-15.
Probable starters for the Owls
Friday night are Andres Martinez
(174) and Rudy Pizana at tight
ends, Alexis Hinojosa (228) and
Carlos Moreno (230) at tackles,
Ricky Sanchez (197) and John
Strawser (229) at guards, Steve
Castro (218) at center, Rocha
(150) at quarterback, Carmel
Martinez (198) at fullback, with
Torres and Freddy Martinez (150)
in the halfback slots.
On defense, likely starters are
Pizana and Juan Lopez (146) at
ends, Castro and Hinojosa at
tackles, Carmel Martinez at nose
guard, Brandon Novasad (168) and
Henry Martinez (173) at inside
linebackers, Torres and Rey Perez
(139) at the corners, Frank Barra
(154) at strong safety and Andres
Martinez at free safety.

Ingleside and laft is at Goliad
Friday night.
The Lady Owls didn't let the
fact Temple was out bother them
against Goliad.
"The girls have accepted that,
and it hasn't had a major impact,"
Hinojosa said. "That's positive."
Youthful Goliad played like old
hands at times in what turned out
to be a defensive match.
"Goliad had spurts where they
would get aggressive," Hinojosa
said. "Although young, they were
hitting a lot. They were picking up
everything we were hitting over.
0 "But our serves were on
target, and we had strong
showings from our younger
players. Vanessa Guzman had a
good game both offensively and
defensively. Shannon Thomas was
good at serving and at the net,
with two blocks and two spikes.
"Brenda Medina had five kills at
the very end to help us."

A GRAND AWARD PLAQUE was recently presented to the Board
of Directors of the San Patricio Soil and Water Conservation
District at ceremonies in Austin. Seen above (L to R) are Ed
O'Boyle, presenting the Goodyear Award to Board members
Powell Brown, Joel Hoskinson, Robert Barlow, Dennis Kastner
and Don Swann.
This morning I had a great
experience during my
walking/running exercise.
The physical exercise was
certainly rewarding, but the time
with Jesus iri the morning
listening to praise/worship music
on a Walkman was very personal
and Spiritually refreshing. Praise
Jesus that He is alive and pursues
a continual love relationship with
those who unconditionally love
Him!
That is what "Sonshine" is all
about.
The area Southern Baptist
Churches gathered at First Baptist
Taft Tuesday for our annual
meeting that encouraged us to see
what we did last year and will do
during the coming year
concerning sharing Jesus as Savior
and Lord with people that God
brings our way or takes us to. The
praise, worship, sermons,
fellowship and business portion of
our gathering was a great
experience and challenge.

Winter is upon us here in

warm coats and jackets.
Well, unfortunately, some
folks don't always have what is
needed. That's where we can help.

can help with will be a blessing to

efforts exerted in carrying out the
plan failed to provide the desired
results. Now, Troutman says, if
the student and parents would like
one final opportunity to complete
the students education, a slot at
the alternative school can be made
available. "If the alternative school
approach also fails, the District
will be left with no option except
to expel the student", said the
Superintendent.
The 1995 Textbook Committee
for the Odem-Edroy School
District was named by the
Trustees Tuesday Night. Named to
serve on the Committee were
Norma Gafford, Sylvia Diaz, Celia
Zamora, Carolyn Woodward, Bill
Bergman, Ann Witten, Rex
Bucholz, Alfredo Holguin, Robert
Franco,Willie Haug, Mary K. Hines
and Chad Fox. Named as an Ex
Officio member of the Committee
was Judy Pate. Superintendent
P.M. Troutman will serve as
Chairman.
The Trustees also received a
report from the Superintendent
informing the them that problems
with the stadium public address
system recently experienced at a
home game have been corrected
and measures taken to protect
against a recurrence of the
problem.
The Board was also told of a
Traffic Pattern Survey being taken
on the campus by Urban
Engineering the purpose of which
will be to make recommendation
which will result in safer, more
efficient movement of automobile
traffic in and around the campus.
The study is also expected to
produce recommendation on
actions necessary to repair or
replace areas in the elementary
school parking lot that have been
damaged by school buses.
With regard to recent
construction on the elementary
campus, Troutman told the board
that the contractor is working
through the architects "punch-
list" to correct errors discovered
in the finished work. He also told
the Board that a Consulting Civil
Engineer has discovered some
severe damage to the roof of the
multipurpose room at the
elementary school and is
preparing recommendations for
it's repair.
On other issues on Tuesday
night's agenda, the Board took the
following actions;
* Designated Superintendent
P.M. Troutman as authorized
representative for Lone Star
Investment Pool.
‘Accepted a bid of $401.80 from
Siesta Cattle Co. of Stockdale for
the purchase of a 1975 GMC, 72
passenger, school bus which had
been declared as surplus by the
district. There were six bids for
the vehicle with the lowest bid
coming in at $100.
at our church we will be blessed
by the presence of two of our
sister Hispanic Southern Baptist
Churches, El Calvario Bautista
Iglesia and Primera Bautista
Iglesia, who along with our church
family will have an "All Church
Praise Service," with a fellowship
meal afterwards.
This is a wonderful time when
people will sing congregational
hymns, solos, duets, do dramatic
presentations, etc. The criteria is
that whatever is done will uplift
Jesus. We are excited.
