United Way Gives More Than It Gets
You only get back what you put
in, right?
Not necessarily. With United
Way, our area gets far more in
return — but perhaps not for
much longer.
United Way of the Coastal Bend
has offered residents a variety of
health and human services from
agencies located throughout the
area and is funding four programs
out of Sinton:
* Sinton for Youth Corporation
* Salvation Army Service Unit

Last year, area United Way
programs received more than
$24,000 in allocations. Since
1990, the amount of dollars
coming back to the area has
increased more than $16,000.
"More than ever, the old
United Way adage applies: Local
dollars are helping local people,"
says Terry Webster, chairman of
the Odem/Sinton/Mathis United
Way Unit.
"However," he quickly adds,
"contributions from the
Odem/Sinton/Mathis area have
not followed that same trend."
Area contributions have
decreased from around $27,000 in
1990 to just over $13,000 last
year.
"But the money going back to
our area has more than doubled,"
Webster says. "Additionally, area
residents not only use the
services of United Way agencies in
Sinton, they also use agency
services in corpus Christi and
surrounding areas."
In 1993 there were more than
15,000 contacts made to United
Way agencies from
Odem/Sinton/Mathis area citizens
that are were valued at more than
$41,000.
"Since the entire organization
is run on support and
contributions from local
residents, United Way cannot
continue to fund even the most
desperately needed programs if
support and contributions
continue to decrease," Webster
warns.
"I am counting on everyone to
help us reach and even surpass
our goal of $20,000 this year.
Currently, we have raised only 34
percent. Our goal is very
attainable, but it will require
community ownership and
involvement," he says.
"I would like to thank everyone
who has supported United Way
throughout the years. I believe the
residents of our area will take
pride in our history of charitable
giving and once again come
through for the United Way, the
way it has come through for us,"
he says.
"If you didn't give last year,
give this year. If you gave last
year, give a little more this year
and help our area make its goal."
When approached to make a
contribution to United Way,
Webster urges residents to
consider the benefits they already
receive or would receive should
they call on a United Way agency
for help.

By Bro. Larry Holden
Our church family will start
revival meetings Sunday through
the following Friday. Our church
is very excited and is anticipating
God to do what only He can do!
Here there is also the
realization that we can not just
settle for six days of nice
meetings with great preaching
and singing from our evangelistic
team. Spiritual Awakening is what
happens when God's people do
what He says, trust, believe and
are available to be used of Him
unconditionally. God told us that,
"if My people who are called by
My name humble themselves and
pray and seek My face and turn
from their wicked ways, then I
will hear from heaven, will forgive
their sin and will heal their land."
That is what we are now doing.
We are meeting this week every
night at 7 p.m. at the church to
pray for this to happen. Saturday
at 7:30 a.m., we are having a
The Refuge
Greetings to all Odem
Residents and fellow Christians.
Praise the Lord!
"If you love me, feed my
sheep" - That was one of the
commandments of our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ, and here at
the Spirit of the Lord Ministry
Refuge Too, we are keeping that
commandment.
We are on a campaign to
collect can goods for the needy.
We are asking all concerned to
please help us in this attempt to
feed the hungry. If you want to
give staples or cans, there is a
collection box both in Corpus
Christi and Odem here at the
Refuge.
We want to thank all who gave
sweaters and coats and blankets.
We are always in need of these
things. There is a certain feeling
we enjoy in helping. Praise the
Lord.
Refuge schedule:
* Monday through Friday from
noon to 5 p.m.

men's prayer breakfast to seek
God in prayer for revival. All men
are welcome to come.
Also on Saturday from 7 a.m.
to 7 p.m. we are having
volunteers to pray in our prayer
room in 30 minute increments.
We are doing our best to
demonstrate to God that we really
want lasting true revival and
renewal for us and our
community and our nation. Many
people believe the only hope for
America is another touch of God
from heaven. We believe that!
On Monday, 60 WMU ladies
met at the Welder Wildlife Refuge
in Sinton to pray for the WMU
World Day of Prayer. It was a
wonderful experience.
Herman Cramer from Seguin,
who was with us last year for a
great revival, will be with us
again. Our music evangelists are
Tom, Patty and Justin Estes from
Bishop. They're great!
Our activities for the week
are:
* Sunday School at 9:30 a.m.,
with services ac 10:45 a.m. and 6
p.m.
* We will have a covered dish
dinner on the grounds after the
Sunday morning a.m. service.
* Monday through Friday there
will be 10 a.m. Study with Bro.
Herman and evening services at 7
p.m.
* Tuesday we will have the
children's corn dog supper at 6
p.m.
* Wednesday evening will be
the youth pizza supper at 6 p.m.
All children and youth are invited
to these events.
A nursery will be provided for
all revival activities. We are a
