TOO MUCH CONCERN
Congresswoman Edith Green of Oregon asked the Library
of Congress to compile the total amount of funds a family
could receive if that family took advantage of all public
assistance programs available. On the basis of two
hypothetical families--one a mother with four children
ranging in age from preschool to the college level and the
other a mother with eight children ranging from preschool to
college-Mrs. Green was advised that the first family could
collect a total of $11,513 a year under various programs of
federal aid ranging from health care to scholarships. The
Second family, if all available federal programs were
utilized, could have an annual income of over $21,000.
Commented Mrs. Green, “Now for those people across the:
country who are saying this is a government that does not
have any concern for the poor...I suggest they look at these
programs.”
A lot of taxpayers are looking at the programs and do not
like what they see--a country that is being overwhelmed by
the adverse ratio between producers and nonproducers.
Lubbock To
Gel Cottonseed
Food Plant
A $1.5 million cottonseed
flour mill-the first in the
world--is being built and is
expected to be in operation
before 1973 in Lubbock, making
high-protein foods from cot-
tonseed.
It is expected that the mill,
when completed, will turn out
25 tons a day of a 65 percent
food concentrate that will look
and taste like powdered milk,
according to Jim Ridlehuber,
chief chemist of the Plains
Cooperative Oil Mill which is
having the new plant built.
The expected food uses will
include baked goods, meat
substitutes and meat extenders
and a product for use in
beverages. It is also expected
that the initial uses of the new
cottonseed products will be in
prepared foods rather than in
raw form on storage shelves.
Cottonseed flour may become a
reality later.
Ridlehuber, quoted in wire
service news stories, explains
the new product:
“The flour-from-cottonseed
process was developed by the
U. S. Department of
Agriculture in New Orleans. A
pilot plant has been established
in India.
“We have spent two years
developing the necessary
engineering for a commercial
plant--the first of its kind in the
world.” He said that the
finished product will be one of
the best available vegetable
sources of high protein food
supplements.
Cost of the new protein is
expected to be one-twentieth
the cost of meat protein or one-
fourth the cost of milk protein
in the form of powdered milk,
Ridlehuber is quoted as saying.
The new plant is located, as
is the Plains Cooperative Oil
Mill, in an area that produces
about a sixth of the cotton
grown in the world and in a
state that is first in the U. S. in
the production of cotton.

Flathead Catfish
Sets New Record
J. H. Beardin thought his
artificial lure had struck a
stump while trolling on Lake
Tyler.
He and his partner turned the
boat around and headed to the
point of the hang-up.
The stump turned out to be
the new state record flathead
catfish, and it put up quite a
fight before yielding to
Beardin’s bass tackle.
The fish weighed in at 67
pounds, which is nine pounds
heavier than the old record
holder in the rod-and-reel
division. A 104-pound flathead
caught on a trotline at Lake
McQueeney in 1956 is tops in
the unrestricted division.
Beardin, who lives at
Whitehouse, had the fish
weighed Feb. 19 on certified
scales and met the other
requirements set forth by the
Texas State Game Fish
Records Committee of the
department.
The fish 47 V2 inches long and
had a girth of 3iy2 inches.
Randy Tschirhart from
Castroville and party of 6
caught several yellow cats
weighing 39, 36, 32, 28,14, and 8
lbs.
Curtis Moore and party from
Sari Antonio caught several
pan size fish. The F. P. Minters
party of 4 from Seagraves
caught a total of 160 lbs. of fish
of all sizes these last two days
(Tuesday.)
Jack Cox and brother from
Austin have caught about 60
lbs. of blue catfish. Cox said
that Monday night he threw his
rod and reel in the water out in
front of his trailer and caught a
5 lb. blue catfish about ten
minutes after having thrqwn
his rod into the water. ‘
