Lagarto Ladies Meet
At Bee County Club
Ladies of the Lagarto
Community Club met Aug. 9 at
the beautiful Beeville Country
Club.
After a delicious salad
luncheon, nine guests were
presented, they were Mrs. May
Weatherly, Minnie Porter,
Bonnie Sanquinet, Eloise
Yount, Bea Reeves, Pauline
Campbell, Helen Buyher, Dona
Oates and Mrs. John Gilbreath.
Club members were Mrs.

discussing things to do in the

College Expects
1500 Students
The president of Bee County
College, Grady C. Hogue,
expects a total enrollment of
1500 students this fall
semester. This includes full
and part time students on the
campus as well as those
registered for credit courses
offered in other towns.
Registration for the fall
semester will continue until
noon, Sept. 1.
Classes will begin Sept. 4.
Mr. and Mrs. T. L.
Sutherland have returned from
Ann Arbor, Mich., where they
attended the marriage of their
son, John C. Sutherland, to
Rita Krull in St. Patrick’s
Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday,
August 11.
The bride is the daughter of

Barbara Fojtik was honored
with a miscellaneous shower
Sunday at the Mathis Clubs and
Library Building.
The table was decorated with
a green tablecloth, overlaid
with a white lace cloth.
The centerpiece was a pink
and white flower bouquet.
Servers were Sally Schneider
and Phyllis Cockrell.
Seated at the register was
Sharon Smejkal. Guests
present were served punch,
cookies and sandwiches.
Hostesses were Mrs. Bobby
Bauch, Mrs. Marvin Buetow,
Mrs. Jimmy Cockrell, Mrs.
Elroy Freitag, Mrs. Marvin
Groom, Mrs. Jeff Huddleston,
Mrs. Mike Huser, Mrs. Frank

and Mrs. Larry Wallek.
Mrs. Arthur Krull and the late
Mr. Krull.
The Reverend Father Robert
Ross, of Boston, Mass., per-
formed the double ring
ceremony. Tom Sutherland
and Scott Sutherland of
Hamilton, Ohio, served as altar
boys.
Maid of honor was Miss
Sharon Krull, sister of the
bride. Alan W. Price of
Tacoma, Wash., was best man.
Mrs. John Murrel, sister of
the bride, attended as
bridesmaid. Lt. David
Thibodeau, of Blytheville Air
Force Base, New York, served
as groomsman. Mr. John
Murrel and Marc Iott seated
the guests. Beth Sutherland of
Hamilton, Ohio, was flower
girl, and Craig Sutherland also
of Hamilton, was ring bearer.
The wedding was followed by
a seated dinner at the home of
the bride.
A wedding reception and
dance was held on Saturday
evening in the Knights of
Columbus Hall.
After a wedding trip, the
newlyweds will reside in -
College Station, Texas.
Vidaurri Visits
Lazaro Vidaurri is here
visiting with his parents Mr.
and Mrs. Tomas Vidaurri of M-
athis.
Lazaro is with the Marines
and will be home for about 25
days. When he returns to duty
he will be going to Hawaii.
Newberry Attends
Reserve Camp
Samuel H. Newberry, son of
retired U.S. Air Force
Lieutenant Colonel and Mrs.
Harvey B. Newberry, who
reside on Lagarto Star Route,
Sandia, is attending a six-week
Air Force Reserve Officers
Training Corps summer
training encampment at Dyess
AFB, Tex. Cadet Newberry is a
student at Bee County College,
Beeville.

Mrs. Antonio Urquizo is
spending some days with her
daughter, Mrs. Adelmira
Gonzales in Mathis.

Walter A. Dickerson of
Mathis has been awarded an
undergraduate degree from
Texas A&M University.
Dickerson, son of Mr. and

Mathis, earned his degree in
physical education.

Ladies of the Lagarto
Community Club, kicked off
their fall work shop Aug. 23, in
preparation for their Christ-
mas Bazaar.
There were 19 members and
three guests present, all with
many different ideas to ex-
change.
We are always happy to have
visitors and new members.
Your ideas and suggestions are
always welcomed.
For ladies wishing to join our
club, we meet the second
Thursday of each month at 2:30
p.m. at Lagarto School house.
Monday night a farewell
coffee was held at the Zephyr
Baptist Encampment, for the
departing Brother James
Dawson and family. Brother
Dawson has been called to fill a
position at the Travis En-
campment at Austin.
The Lagarto Community
Club presented them with a
lovely engraved silver tray.
Rev. and Mrs. Simmons of
the Sandia Baptist church
presented them with two lovely
floral oil paintings that Mrs.
Simmons had painted.
Dawson and family shall be
greatly missed by their many
.friends and members of the
surrounding communities. The
many things they did for the
Community Club will never be
forgotten and all the ladies give
their heartiest thanks for their
unselfish help.
We wish them well in their
daily undertakings. Austin’s
gain is our loss.
Hostesses for the coffee were
members of the Lagarto
Community Club.
Ladies of the Lagarto
Community Club are having a
bake sale and book sale at the
Arrowhead office Saturday,
Sept. 1.

Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Aguilar
received the sales per-
formance award of 1968
presented yearly by the Ford
Motor Co.
The award was a 7-day
vacation which took them from
Corpus Christi International
Airport to Houston, New
Orleans, and San Juan, Puerto
Rico, where they proceeded by
air to St. Thomas Island where
they boarded the S. S. In-
dependence, a luxury liner, for
a 3-day cruise to New York
City.
TEN YEARS AGO, AUGUST
29, 1963:
The San Patricio boy who
was bitten by a rattlesnake
four times, Earl Dean Mc-
Cown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul
W. McCown, celebrated his
seventh birthday in the
hospital Saturday and his
mother reported he is in very
good spirits despite the painful
treatment he is undergoing in
an attempt to save his leg.
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO,
AUSUT 29, 1958:
Samuel Hernandez, son of
Mrs. Reyna Hernandez of
Mathis, left by plane for Puerto
Rico, where he attended the
Mennonite Bible School at La
Plata.
The 16-year-old Mathis High
School graduate plans to study
Theological and vocational
subjects.
Samuel has been an active
member of the Mennonite
Youth Fellowship and Sunday
School of the Calvary Men-
nonite Church, serving as
Youth Fellowship chairman for
six months and Sunday School
superintendent for one year.
TWENTY YEARS AGO,
AUGUST 28, 1953:
Mrs. H. H. Howell and Mrs.' $1
G. R. Ramsower are leaving ,
Friday morning for New York
to meet Joan Ramsower,
Roberta and Robert Howell
who are returning from a tour
of Europe.
They were arriving by plane
from England on September 1.
Mrs. Ramsower and Joan
planned to fly back to Mathis
on the 12th, while the Howells
will motor back in the car. t (

Proud Parents
A baby boy was born to Mr.
and Mrs. Felix Sanchez of
Orange Grove, Saturday, Aug.
18, at the Alice Hospital.
The baby was named Rodolfo
Sanchez and weighed 9 lbs., 3
Felicita Villarreal and her,
son, Joe Felix, spent 10 weeks
in Statesboro, Ga. on vacation,
visiting with her daughter and
son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. H. M.
Haklin and family. They en-
joyed a nice vacation.
Mr. and Mrs. Jose Garza of
San Antonio were in Mathis
this weekend. They stayed at
the lake and enjoyed a nice hot
weekend. t
