Q. During my lifetime I have
experienced a good bit of illness.
However, basically my health
has remained fairly good except
for these short periods of poor
health and hospitalization.
I am somewhat older than I
admit to all my friends and
signed up for medicare when it
first came out. There has been
cause for me to use It several
times since then. However, none
of it was real serious and the
hospitals and doctors were
promptly paid.
For this reason, little con-
sideration has actually been
given to what benefits might be
expected under the hospital part
if I should be ill for a long time.
Most of this information
contained in
the literature you have fur-
uuniL
For some reason, as the years
pass, I seem to find it harder to
keep up with and understand
things. Please advise me as
the benefits I may expect Grom
the hospital portion of medicare.
A. I’ll be happy to and feel
certain many others will also be
interested.
During the time you have been
enrolled for medicare, over $3
billion in hospital bills have been
paid. You can now enjoy the
peace of mind that comes from
knowing that a serious illness
the hospital, you also have 100 in the extended care facility and follow a period of hospitalization
days of care in a skilled nursing
home or extended care facility.
To qualify for this, you must
require at least three days of
hospitalization and have a need
for this service within 14 days of
your hospital release. Your
hospital insurance pays for the
all but $5.50 a day for the next SO
days.
In addition, your hosplta
insurance pays for up to 100
home visits a year by nurses,
physical therapists, or other
health owrkers from an
authorized Home Health
first 20 days of covered services Agency. These services must
and they must all be furnished
under a plan of treatment set Up
1 by your doctor.

signed up for social security, be

will no longer cause you deep
financial distress.
Your hospital insurance pays
for all but $44 of your first 60
days of hospitalization in a semi-
private room. If the stay should
extend for more than 60 days, it
pays all but $11 a day for another
30 days. In addition to these 90
days in each benefit period,
there is a one time life reserve of
60 additional benefit days. In this
case, if you should use your 90
days, , you could have 60 ad-
ditional days.
This extra period would cost
you $22 daily for each day used.
The term “benefit period” is a
period that begins on the first
day you receive services in an
approved hospital and ends when
you have not been a patient in
any hospital or extended care
facility for at least 60 con-
secutive days. In this case you
receive a completely new start
on f your 90 days
hospitalization.

Emergency Funds
Available For
Welfare Mothers
SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Up to
$50,000 in federal funds will be
made available as an emergen-
cy service to local mothers on
welfare to buy food stamps, fit
was announced Monday.
Armando Macaluso, of the
Economic Opportunities Devel-
opment Corp. here, said the
grant would be provided by the
regional branch of the Office of
Economic Opportunities in Aus-
tin.
The announcement came dur-
ing a meeting between protest-
ing mothers on welfare and city
apd state officials that was
called in an attempt to settle
the women’s grievances over lo-
cal welfare program policies,
The $50,000 is part of emer-
gency food and medial service
funds. Macaluso said the money
will go only to people whose as-
sistance grants were cut by the
state May 1 due to lack of funds
It will be available only to
purchase food and will be used
to cover that part pf food money
which was specifically reduced,
he said.
