BRAZIL PRESIDENT GETS
SET FOR CONGRESS FIGHT
PONYTAIL
RIO DE JANEIRO TapT -
President Joao Goulart, a wily
politician, squares off against the
Brazilian Congress for a show-
down fight this coming week.
The stakes are high.
Goulart wants to win back the
powers once granted Brazilian
presidents.
Congressional leaders seem
Just as determined to deny him

prime minister withdraw from a
showdown, it may be too late to
head off trouble.

country’s plight

Goulart so far, might carry out

To stave off a threat of ruin,
military leaders might feel forced
to interfere and take over.
Goulart has chosen his own. bat-
tlefield and primed his weapons.
Two weapons are beans and rice,
the staple foods of ordinary Bra-
