In recent years Is completion of
the multi-million dollar Baytown-
La Porte vehicular tunnel under
t^e Houston Ship Channel.
Since the city’* inception JS
years ago. It has been in a bottle-
neck is far as automobile routes
are concerned.
Moat of the intervening time the
city has had to depend on either
roundabout routes, or ferries which
delayed crossing times when traffic
oiled up—for instance on cross-
channel football games.
The tunnel today Is complete and
is ready for the official opening
Tuesday
The huge tube has many unusual
aspeetj. One of these is the compli-
cated approach road system. The
most elaborate unit In this sys-
tem is the three-level traffic ex-
change on the La Porte side.
It is the first of its. kind in Texas,
and one of the few in the nation.
It will afford immediate and quick
access to and from the tunnel to
traffic going in anv one of three
directions, out of the tunnel to
either La Porte or Houston, and
into the tunnel from the same
sources.
On the Baytown side of the tun-
nel appraac}. astern is a road
across Goose Creek cutting through
the Goose Creek oil field. It is

Baytown civic leaders are proud
of the $10 million project, believing
it will quicken commercial develop-
ment of the area. It gives the city
its first direct and uninterrupted
traffic artery aad traffic between
Houston and the industrially busy
East Harris county will be short-
ened from 20 to 35 minutes.
