Owls Pop Panthers, Prepare For Pirates
It was a bittersweet Friday night
football game in Odem last week
when the Odeiji Owls convincingly
beat the Aransas Pass Panthers
before a stadium packed Homecom-
ing crowd. Subduing the normally
upbeat atmosphere was the
awareness of the death on Friday
morning of Owl Sophomore Tackle
Johnny Perez. Perez suffered a
reported epileptic seizure at his
home early Friday morning before
being rushed to Riverside Hospital
where he died. Prior to the start of
the game, the crowd was asked to
join in a moment of silence in
observance of the tragic death. To
further honor Perez, The American
Flag at the north end of the stadium
was lowered to half mast during the
game.
In other activity prior to the
game, 12 Odem High School senior
girls, nominated for Homecoming
Queen, were introduced to the fans.
Three of the candidates were named
finalists including Delilah
Rodriguez, Monica Gonzalez and
Ronny Jo Villarreal. Honored as
Homecoming Queen for 1993 was
Delilah Rodriguez, daughter of
Mayor and Mrs. Jessie Rodriguez
Sr.
Following the pre-game activity
the Owls George Ruiz received the
opening kick-off at the Owl 13 yard
line. Ruiz started straight up field,
approached a rapidly growing pile of
blockers and would-be tacklers,
veered quickly to his left and then to
his right and continued his sprint for
a total of 87 yards and an Owl
touchdown. Kicker Santiago Reyna
came off the bench and punched
through the extra point with the time
on the clock showing 11:45 seconds
left in the first quarter, with Odem
ahead 7-0.
Odem then kicked to the Panthers
who started at their own 20 yard line.
Odem’s defense held for 3 downs
before Panther quarterback Audie
Reed sneaked the ball up the middle
picking up a first down at his own 32.
On the next series of downs, the Owls
held and had the Panthers at a 4th
and two when once again Reed call-
ed his own number and swept
around his own left end, running 58
yards for a touchdown. Panther
tailback Robert Cunningham tried
the extra point which went wide
right of the goal posts. Odem’s lead
was cut to 1, with 7:55 remaining in
the quarter.
Aransas Pass teed up the ball to
kick off to the Owls an attempted an
unsuccessful on-side kick which the
Owls covered at their own 43 yard
line. The Owl offense came on the
field and lined up with 1st and 10.
Quarterback Andrew Lunoff took
the snap from center, dropped back,
set-up and arced the ball to halfback
Freddie Martinez running down the
side line. Martinez caught the pass
and continued to run across the goal
line making the score Odem 13,
Aransas Pass 6. Once again Reyna
came on to kick the extra point. Now
it’s Odem 14, Aransas Pass 6, with
the time remaining on the clock
reading 7:45 seconds. At this point in
the game the two teams have played

4:15 seconds. The Odem Owls, with
14 points on the scoreboard have had
possession of the ball for a total of 25
seconds.
The second quarter was notable
primarily by the fact that it was a
great exercise for both teams in run-
ning, passing, punting and penalties.
With 3:13 left before the half, the
Panthers took possession at their
own 20 and began grinding out the
yardage with tailback Cunningham
and fullback Josh Yeomans slashing
through the trenches backed up by
some great receptions by Panther
tightend Brandon Krolczyk.
In a battle with the clock the Pan-
thers had the ball 1st and 10 at
Odem’s 5 yard line with :22 seconds
left in the half. The Panthers at-
tempted two runs and a pass losing 3
yards and 19 seconds in the process.
With the clock stopped at :03 and 4th
down and goal at the 8 yard line,
Reed took the ball from center and
lobbed it to Krolczyk in the end zone-
-touchdown. The point-after attempt
was a hand-off from Reed to
Yeomans who ran off tackle and
scored the two point conversion.
With no time left in the First Half,
the score was Odem 14-Aransas
Pass 14.
The second half started with the
Owls trying to catch the Panthers
off-guard with an onside kick. It was
unsuccessful and gave Aransas Pass
the ball at the 50 yard line. The Owl
defense then took the field allowing
the Panthers one first down before
forcing a punt on the next series.
Taking over with first and 10 at their
own 15 yard line, the Owls slogged
their way down field with runs by
Tommy Moore and Frank Barra,
and passes to Andres Martinez,
Freddie Martinez, Joey Torres and
George Ruiz.
With the clock approaching the 3
minute mark left in the 3rd quarter
Moore took the handoff from Lunoff
and skirted around end for a 35 yard
carry finally being tackled at the
Aransas Pass 24 yard line where the
Owls had it first and 10. After an in-
complete pass, a 3 yard run by Fred-
die Martinez and a 15 yard run by
Joey Torres, the Owls were at the 8
yard line where Lunoff gave the ball
to Moore who ran it in for a
touchdown. The extra point was

AND THE WINNER IS...
Rockport-Fulton, 10-0. The Pirates
skunked Taft, last weekend, to climb
into sole possession of the District
30-3A lead with only two games left
in the regular season.
The Pirates were preseason
favorites to repeat as district
champs, and now they have taken a
large step in that direction on the
field. They are now 5-0 in district
play (6-2 for the season), with Taft
and Odem tied for second at 4-1
(Odem’s loss is to Taft). Both teams
have 5-3 season records.
OF THE TWO frontrunners, Taft
has the easier schedule and, unless
Rockport falters, both should make
the playoffs.
Odem, a 40-28 winner over Aran-
sas Pass last week, still has a shot —
a big one, at that — as they travel to
Rockport this week. An Odem win
puts the race in a turmoil. At AP, the
Panthers (3-5, 1-4) have now lost
four straight district games.
Sinton also has a shot at Rockport
the last week of the season, and
would like nothing better than to
slap a loss on them — just for old
times sakes. Sinton will sit at home
during this year’s playoffs, a seat to
which the Pirates are not accustom-
ed.
The Pirates brought Ingleside’s
Cinderella season back to reality
last week, with a 48-29 thumping.
Sinton improved to 4-3-1 for the
season and 3-2 in district play, while
Ingleside is now 4-4 and 2-3.
MATHIS LOGGED their first W of
the district campaign, rolling up
over 500 yards of total offense in a 42-
20 win over West Oso.
The Pirates evened their season
record at 4-4, while West Oso is now
0-5 in district and 1-7 for the year.
THIS WEEK, Odem at Rockport
is, of course, the big game on the
slate. Much is at stake for both
teams, but especially for the Owls.
Another district loss and the Owls
are out; in other words, a Rockport
win puts the Pirates and Taft into
the playoffs — barring a series of un-
predictable results in the last two
weeks.
The Owl offense has come to life in
the last couple of weeks, with big
plays from their passing game
leading the way. The Owl passing
game is very effective — when there
is no pressure on the quarterback.
But, look for the Pirates to put plen-
ty of defensive pressure
everywhere.
In last week’s win over Taft, the
Pirate defense held Verdell Murphy,
one of the district’s top rushers, to
only 50 yards and stopped the
’Hound running game short of the
190-yard mark. It was probably then-
best defensive performance of the
season.
On the other side of the ball, the
Pirates got 120 yards from their top
rusher, Robert Herron and totaled
nearly 300 offensive yards against a
tough ’Hound defense.
Odem’s defense has given up too
many yards and, really, too many
points; but all of the district’s
defenses have given up more than
the usual number of points. After
five district games, only Rockport
and Taft have allowed less than 100
points to district opposition.
The Owls will need to play their
best defensive game and put some
points on the board to have a chance
of derailing the Pirate playoff train.
TAFT CAN’T AFFORD to let up
now. With only two games left, they
need two more victories to get back
to the post-season playoffs.
They finish the season with Aran-
sas Pass this week and Ingleside in
the finale. The ’Hounds should have
no problems, but they do have a
habit of not playing inspired football
against what they consider run of
the mill teams.
That kind of thinking — and play-
ing — is very dangerous at this stage
of the season.
MATHIS VISITS INGLESIDE for
what could be a high-scoring contest
matching to potent offensive teams.
The Pirates totaled over 500 yards
last week, and have averaged nearly
320 yards per game, while scoring
183 points. The Mustangs have about
the same yardage figures and have
scored 224 points. Both teams are 4-4
for the season and both teams
feature an outstanding running
back.
The Mustangs’ offensive attack is
the more balanced of the two, with a
solid passing game — and that could
