The Harper Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors
welcomed a new business to town last month. The Trading Post,
located on the north side of Hwy. 290 across from the post office,
has everything from expensive, unique antiques to smaller
collectibles.
Owner Joy Kyriakopoulous, who is originally from
Nottinghamshire, England, explains in her distinctive English
accent, that she learned her love of antiques from her mother.
Kyriakopoulous says her shop offers everything from the
"ridiculous to the sublime."
She opened her the shop with antiques she had been collecting
for years and pieces she bought on a recent trip to England.
She says her taste run from the ecletic and it shows. Among
her more unique items are an authentic London Bobby uniform
(this is not for sale, but only to be admired) and a flag that flew ,ghe had chest pains jhey did a

Her more numerous items include linens, cast iron pieces, brass
rubbings, metal toy cars and trucks. One of her more spectacular
pieces is a walnut drop-leaf table which had been in Shreiner
College for many years. "It is a very old piece," she says.
"It is getting harder and harder to get good stuff," she says. She
says the country has gone collection crazy. "People are
collecting everything you can imagine." She has a large
collection of maps sold by gas stations. She says a lot of people
collect these "oil maps," especially if they are in mint condition.
She has recently added a window to the side of the shop to
create a bay window in the front of the building. "I am going to
put a bench seat here with a cooler of cold drinks so the men can
relax while the women shop." She hopes it will look sort of like
an English pub so she will feel right at home.
The shop is open from Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m.
to 4 p.m. or by appointment.
She has found that Highway 290 is well traveled from Houston
to 1-10. "I have had some good business so far," she says.
"There are a lot of dealers traveling east and west on Highway
290". She says she has had tourist from Germany, France,
Belgium, and Japan stop into her shop.
"Most of them want some momento from Harper or from
Texas," she says. She is trying to think of something to sell that
has Harper, Texas on it. "I think I could get some postcards from
Harper printed."
"This is my third life," Kyriakopoulous explains. She says after
her children were raised, she sold real estate and then taught
school for a number of years. Her husband, Athanasios, owns
