WASHINGTON (AP) - A Sen-
ate appropriations subcommittee
i asked todi
was asked today to vote 0500,000
more to finance a program lor
eradication of the screwworm fly
than has been recommended by
the House Appropriations Commit-
tee.
The lull S3 million asked by the
Department ol Agriculture lor the
program was requested by de-
partmental witnesses and spokes-
men from Texas. The pest attacks
cattle.
A program in the Southeast,
where sterile flies were released
in an effort to eliminate the fly
population, has resulted In con-
siderable savings to cattle produ-
cers there, the subcommittee was
told.
M. R. Clarkson, associate ad-
ministrator of the agricultural re-
search service, said cattle produ-
cers In Texas are losing.an aver-
age of 310 million a year because
of the infestation.
C. H. Devaney, vice president
of the Texas Farm Bureau, said
southwestern states are ready to
cooperate financially with the fed-
eral government in the program.
Because of local plans to match
federal money, Devaney said, a
federal reduction ol 3500,000
would actually mean a 31 million
