— When heresy charges were
brought against a Calvinist Dutch

visions of a burning at the stake.

South Africa, supports the oHicml
segregation policy.
Geyser disagrees and made his
objections public by contributing
to an anti-segregation book. For
this he was severely criticized al
the last N. II Kerk General As-
sembly and his resignation de-
manded.
Before he could reply, three of
his students at Pretoria Universi-
ty brought the heresy charges plus
tiie insubordination charge again*'
him. The insubordination ohar„-
eoncerned a rule made at the last
General Assembly, aimed at reb-
els like Geyser, that the church's
ruling on matters such as segre-
gation could not be criticized in
public.
In its verdict, the 13-man Syn
odal Commission dismissed the
charge of insubordination as not
adequately proved.
Geyser was actually condemned
for interpreting a certain verse in
the second book of Phtllipians as
meaning that Christ was lower in
status than God before and aftei
His incarnation and prior to His
resurrection. This was objected to
as detracting from Christ s true
and everlasting Godhead.
Geyser unsuccessfully pleaded
that as a learned interpreter of
the Bible he had the privilege of
freedom. The commission's rejec-
tion of this point was mentioned
last week by another prominent
N' H Kerk theologian. Prof. A.
Van Seims of Pretoria, when he
resigned his position in protest
against the heresy verdict. This
resignation of a man esteemed
here and in the Netherlands was
the first serious repercussion of
tlie Geyser verdict.
Van Seims predicted that rela-
tions between the N. H. Kerk in
this country and the
be severed.
