LOOKING BACKWARDS
From The Files of The Odem-Edroy Times
......aside from the fact that we
have never claimed to have a green
thumb (we can’t even grow a decent
crop of weeds, and have been known
to kill artificial plants), we still keep
trying. We glow proudly when we
have a rose or two. Perhaps it’s in
the way we treat our plants. “That
Gal” used to talk to plants...and it
seemed to work. Of course, it was
sweet talk (which, come to think of
it, certainly worked well with one
guy for many years). We’ve tried
talking to our plants, but apparently
they don’t like the slightly blue haze
created by our choice of words.
Recently we received another of
those ads in the mail offering an
album of music which is supposed to
make plants happy, causing them to
produce beautiful blooms. Wonder if
one of those songs was “Be it ever so
fertile, there’s no place like loam.”

......a friend has this to say about
utility bills: This month’s electric
bill really gave me a shock. The
phone bill left me speechless. The
gas bill gave me gas. And the water
bill is driving me to drink!

......a rule of threes: Three things
to govern: temper, tongue and con-
duct. Three things to cultivate:
courage, affection and gentleness.
Three things to command: thrift, in-
dustry and promptness. Three
things to despise: cruelty, ar-
rogance and ingratitude. Three
things to wish for: health,
gracefullness and intellectual
power. Three things to give: alms to
the needy, comfort to the sad, and
appreciation to the worthy.
-gfr-
......from our mail bag: The public
officials who make a mess of things
have no one to blame but
themselves. But trust them to start
looking for someone else.
-gfr-
......more mail: Women will have
real equality when newspaper
stories tell what a male politician
was wearing.

teacher, and the present becomes
the past; the infant becomes a
parent, and change is the one thing
to last.

......we’ve become pretty handy at
using Ma Bell’s product, so a recent
release caught our eye. It says Alex-
ander Graham Bell invented the
telephone in 1875. We also read that
the bath tub was invented in 1850. So
some people were well off. They had
25 uninterrupted years of being able
to take a bath without getting called
to the phone.

City ordinances and State Laws.
In compliance with the Workers
Compensation Act, the Council
adopted a drug and alcohol policy
which is now required for employers
of 15 or more employees.
The policy states that drug testing
will be mandatory before employ-
ment with the City and may be done,
with justifiable reasons, during
employment.
Commissioners—

Mike Axenfield appeared before the
Court to express concern that one
local drug store exclusively gets the
County’s business.
Axenfield encouraged the Com-
missioners to put the service up for
bids, action that he felt could save
the County “thousands” of dollars.
The Court agreed to include the
item on a future agenda.
Two weeks earlier, the Commis-
sioners were approached by Taft Ci-
ty Manager A1 Veselka with a re-
quest, on behalf of the City of Taft,
that the County consider funding
one-half of the total cost for
reconstruction of a 1,425-foot portion
of Abazola Avenue.
Abazola Avenue, which is located
in the western portion of Taft,
borders the City limits and serves
County property outside the City.
In an update Monday, the
Auditor’s office reported that there
was enough money to enter into the
interlocal agreement. The total cost
for the County would be $10,449.98.
No action was taken by the Court,
pending official approval of the Taft
City Council.
