RENEWAL
“Make me a child again” is
part of a poetic line. One may
take it the wrong way as a
desire to regress back to a child
to escape responsibilities and
adult experiences. But it is a
precious desire to be renewed,
to be restored to the purity of
childhood.
Some material things can be
renovated for a while—home,
a piece of furniture, health —
but eventually will go “the way
of all flesh.”
The spirit of man may be
renewed for always. “So we do
not lose heart. Though our
outer nature is wasting away,
our inner nature is being
renewed every day.” (II
Corinthians 4:16) This is
important for us. It means a
life weakened and scarred in
sin, filled with evil, can be
made new again, restored to
strength, usefulness and
potentiality. It means that in
the wear and tear of everyday
living when our spirits burn
low we may be renewed again.
Worldly thoughts,
unproductive imaginations and
conflicting goals may clutter
our minds. Destructive
emotions, resentments,
conflicting desires, anxieties,
may build up like dirt in an
abandoned house. They wear
and tear our spirits like sand in
a motor. But our inner nature
can be renewed every day.
True conversion in
becoming a Christian restores
the inner man and even creates
a better new person. “For we
ourselves were once foolish,
disobedient, led astray, slaves
to various passions and
pleasures, passing our days in
malice and envy, hated by men
and hating one another; but
when the goodness and loving
kindness of God our Savior
appeared, he saved us, not
because of deeds done by us in
righteousness, but in virtue of
his own mercy, by the washing
of regeneration and renewal in
the Holy Spirit, which he
poured out upon us richly
through Jesus Christ our
Savior, so that we might be
justified by his grace and
become heirs of eternal life.”
(Titus 3:3-7) In the baptism of
water and the Spirit one is
restored and made a new

person in Christ. The new
person is now a child of God
and heir “in hope of eternal
life.” “Truly I say to you,
whoever does not receive the
kingdom of God like a child
shall not enter it.” (Luke
18:17)
God’s power, presence and
Word are essential in our
renewal.
“Restore us to thyself, O
Lord, that we may be restored!
Renew our days as of old!”
(Lam. 5:21)
“The Lord, your God, is in
your midst, A warrior who
gives victory; he will rejoice
over you with gladness, he will
renew you in his love; he will
exult over you with loud
singing as on a day of festival.”
(Zeph. 3:17)
“Bless the Lord ... who
forgives all your iniquity, who
heals all your diseases, who
redeems your life from the pit,
who crowns you with steadfast
love and mercy, who satisfies
you with good as long as you
live so that your youth is
renewed like the eagle’s.” (Ps.
103:1,3-5)
“(You) have put on the new
nature, which is being renewed
in knowledge after the image
of its creafor.”(Col. 3;J 0)
We are renewed in our
minds. “Do not be conformed
to this world but be
transformed by the renewal of
your mind, that you may prove
what is the will of God, what is
good and acceptable and
perfect.” (Romans 12:2)
Cynical, faithless, negative
thoughts, despair in lost
dreams, the backward rather
than forward look are changed
to positive, creative and
fruitful thoughts.
We are renewed in our
spirits. “Put off your old
nature which belongs to your
former manner of life and is
corrupt through deceitful lusts,
and be renewed in the spirit of
your minds, and put on the
new nature, created after the
likeness of God in true
righteousness and 'holiness.”
(Eph. 4:22-24)
Paul’s statement is true for
us, too: “Though our outer
nature is wasting away, our
inner nature is being renewed
every day.”
