TEXAS MAY DRAFT CALL
DOWN; FER. QUOTA MADE
AUSTIN—Call for induction of
3,112 Texas men into the army
in May was received this week
by state Selective Service head-
quarters, Lt.Col. Morris S.
Schwartz, deputy state draft di-
rector, announced this week.
This compares with a call for
4,150 men for April, Colonel
Schwartz pointed out.The May
call is the state’s share of a na-
tional quota of 60,000. The na-
tional quota for April is 80,000.
Colonel Schwartz also announc
ed that . 7,726 draft registrants
have been called for pre-induction
examinations during April. These
examinations will be in prepara-
tion for anticipated inductions in
June.
“Some of those qualified for
induction in April may be avail-
able for May inductions, where
necessary,” Colonel Schwartz
said. “We like to stay ahead of
the game as much as possible
and give the local boards and the
men all the time we can be-
tween examinations and induc-
tion.”
Colonel Schwartz revealed that
Texas made its quota for Febru-
ary. He said reports show that
4,255 men Were inducted during
the month. This figure, he said
includes some delinquents.
Tracing a summary of induc-
tions for Texas since the begin-
ning of the Korean fight, Colonel
Schwartz pointed out that com-
bined monthly quotas from Sep-
tember 1950 through February
1951 add to 18,773. Texas has
actually inducted 19,268, includ-
ing draft law delinquents.
“Some of our local boards are
having a hard time furnishing
men under limitations of present
law,” Colonel Schwartz said, ,‘but
so far the state has made its
quota. We do not anticipate fail-
ure in March.”
Local board quotas for the May-
induction call will not be 'avail-
able at state headquarters until
the latter part of March. April
pre-induction and induction quo-
tas for local boards are now
available at local board offices.
The May quota for induction
brings the total number of men
called for from Texas since be-
ginning of the Korean fight to
30,174. The April pre-induction
physical quota for April brings
total number of men called for
that purpose since beginning of
the Korean conflict to 81,310.
The monthly state quota for
induction is set by national Se-
lective Service headquarters.
Quotas for pre-induction exam-
ination, however, are set by the
state headquartres.
