TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO,
APRIL 1952
At an assembly Monday the
members of the basketball
team were awarded miniature
basketballs. Paula Byer was
given a siller ball by George
Turner in reward for being
selected by the coaches of the
district as a guard on the all-
district team. She also was
elected as one of the captains
for this team.
Staff Sgt. and Mrs. Donald
Cobb have been in Mathis since
March 26 visiting his mother,
Mrs. A. B. Cobb. Sgt. and Mrs.
Cobb are home from Germany
where he was stationed for six
years with the army.
ELEVEN YEARS AGO,
APRIL 1966
Miss Kay McDonald was
honored with a birthday and
graduation luncheon at the
Mesquite Room of the Ranch
Motel Restaurant recently. She
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
W. E. McDonald and a member
of the 1966 Mathis High School
senior class. Hostess was Mrs.
Weldon Winsauer of Houston,
aunt of the honoree.
Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Groom
announce the engagement of
their daughter, Ann, to Marvin
E. Lenz Jr., son of Mr. and
Mrs. Marvin E. Lenz of Vic-
toria. Both are 1965 graduates
of Mathis High School.
Allan Gregorcyk, 1965
Mathis graduate, is a member
of the Texas A & I freshman
track team. Allan is running
the sprint relay, and the mile
relay teams. While running for
the Pirates, Gregoryck set the
school record in the 220 yard
dash with a time of 23.4.

THIRTY-YEARS AGO, APRIL
1947
In one of the upsets of the
high school baseball season,
the Mathis High nine soundly
trounced the Three Rivers
Bulldogs Tuesday night by the
score 12 to 5. The game was
played on the Three Rivers
field.
Mrs. Morgan Porter went to
Calvert this week to visit her
parents.
Bob Langsford of San An-
tonio visited his uncles, Tom,
Frank, and Adolph Bomer here
during the holidays.
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO,
APRIL 1962
Miss Christela Gonzales
became the bride of Augustin
Alaniz in a ceremony at the
Sacred Heart Church Sunday,
April 8, at 2 p.m. The Reverend
Englebert Bartosch officiated.
The bride is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Joaquin Gonzales
and the groom’s parents are
Mr. and Mrs. Flumencio
Alaniz, all of Mathis.
Mrs. Henry McNabb gave
the devotional at the meeting of
the Gleamers Sunday School
class of the First Baptist
Church. The meeting was held
Monday, April 9, at the home of
Mrs. Frank Sharpe.
Mrs. W. O. Sweasey honored
Miss Kay Holleman, a Mathis
High School senior, with a style
show luncheon at the Alice
Country Club last Saturday.

Mrs. Willie Hinnant was
elected president of the Mathis
Teachers’ Association for next
year at the Tuesday evening
meeting.
Mrs. Marilyn Hicks will
represent Mathis in May at the
Navy Relief Carnival at Chase
Field, Beeville.
A theme of “April Showers”
was carried out Friday evening
in Sinton when 254 guests were
entertained at the Blanco
Association Girls’ banquet.
Mrs. T. G. Dorris of Mathis
was in charge of arrangements
as leader of the Blanco
Association of G. A.’s.
Mrs. Garland Hollon honored
her son, Timothy, on his second
birthday Tuesday, with a party
in her home.
Mrs. H. W. Tobin presented
the principles of flower
arranging when she spoke
Wednesday for members of the
Literary Club. Mrs. Fred
Watson was program chair-
man.

AARP Meets
The Mathis Chapter of the
American Association of
Retired Persons met at the
Junior High Cafeteria, Apr. 4,
at 6 p.m. Mrs. Hazel Curtis
presided in the absence of Jack
Hatton, president, who is at
home from the hospital now,
and recovering from his
illness. This meeting was the
monthly business meeting.
After the business meeting a
social hour was observed.
The next meeting will be
April 18 at the Junior High
Cafeteria at 6 p.m. This will
include a covered dish supper
and a program.
