Ali gives $400,000 for
leads in Atlanta slaying
Atlanta—The surprising
$400,000 gift donated by for-
mer heavyweight boxing
champion Muhammad Ali,
still may not have a great
influence on leads in the At-
lanta slayings.
“If $100,000 didn't move
anyone to come forward,
I don't see how half a million
would,” said Chet Detdinger,
a police instructor and private
investigator who has been in-
vestigating the cases since last
summer.
Police say the reward is of-
fered to anyone who pro-
vides information leading to
an arrest and conviction in
the cases. But a single piece
of vital information may
not merit a huge cash reward,
some investigators feel.

“The kinds of leads you
get in a case like this are
bits of things. They have to
be developed, and tied to
other leads,” said a source
close to the probe who asked
not to be identified. “No
one’s going to walk in here
with a solution."
The 27 slayings and dis-
appearance of young blacks
have been investigated by a
special police task force since
July 1979 now.
Fulton County District At-
torney Lewis Slaton called
the donation “a good idea
on Ali’s part. It was generous
of him, and it certainly
can’t hurt anything.” But
he added, “1 never thought
that amount would bring the
same result that a million
would."

fair market value and favor-
able tenns on the sale, you
would have done better than
the average owner selling
without a realtor. The advant-
ages are obvious; you save
the real estate fee. Unfor-
tunately, it rarely works this
way. The average owner is
not familiar with selling pro-
cedures, financing arrange-
ments or market values, and
consequently will not meet
his/her desires. Further, this
new experience could be a
nightmare. A good realtor
may prove to be worth his
weight in gold, especially if
time is of the essence. I be-
lieve that the realtor earns
his fee, in most cases, be-
cause a lot of time, effort
and expense goes into prop-
erly marketing your prop-
erty for sale. And , if it
doesn’t sell, the realtor gets
nothing.
QUESTION:
How can I buy a house with
low monthly payments and
a small down payment?
ANSWER
Generally speaking, small
down payments and low
monthly payments do not go
together. There are some.
Obviously, if the property
is priced low, the down pay-
ment and monthly payments
will be low accordingly. On
the other hand, if you desire
a more expensive property
(with the same down pay-
ment and monthly limitat-
ions) you may consider buy-
ing on a government sub-
sidized program, such as
FHA 235. If you qualify for
the program, your desires
may be met Also, it is pos-
sible to purchase a property
and give the lender a balloon
note, whereby the regular
monthly payments ilre low,
but periodic balloon pay-
ments are made at specific
intervals over the life of the
loan.

not enough people realize
what a fast, economical way
it is to apply for social secu-
rity benefits, too,” Archuleta
said.
“Our office has a special
unit set up to take all types
of applications," he noted.
“By using the telephone,
you will not only save time
and energy, you’ll save the
frayed nerves caused by a
wait in the office,” he explai-
ned. “Besides that, you’ll be
where die documents and in-
formation are and not have to
run home to get them, he
added.
“The procedure is simple,
Archuleta explained. “You
call 229-6466 to apply for
benefits and a special tele-
claims expert asks you the
necessary questions, records
your answers on the forms,
and mails them to you for
signature and return with
any necessary documents in
die self-addressed envelope
provided. Your documents
are returned after being pho-
tocopied.”
Archuleta also explained
that since applications by
telephone are accomplished
so quickly, many employers
are allowing their retiring
workers to call from work
to apply.
He suggested the best time
to call the office is in the
afternoon during the latter
half of the week and month.

QUESTION
Are interest rates on home
loans going to come down
soon?
ANSWER
I don't think that rates will
come down soon. Probably ,
they’ll go up again before
they come down We’re led
to believe that interest rates
under the free market system.
This is not entirely true,
because the- federal govern-
ment has a finger in the pie,
in its attempts to control in-
flation. As home loan interest
rates increase, real estate
prices tend to stabilize. This
is suppose to help out our
nm-away inflation problems.
In any event, it reallv doesn't
matter whether interest rates
are high or low, because real
estate prices will stabilize or
increase accordingly.
