Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Hentrich an-
nounce the engagement and ap-
proaching marriage of their daugh-
ter, Betty, and Richard Barter, son
of Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Barter, all
of Mercedes.
The wedding will be Saturday,
August 29. Miss Hentrich is a
graduate of the Mercedes High
School class of 1953 and Mr. Bar-
ter, a graduate of the Mercedes
High School class of 1950, attended
Pan American College at Edinburg.

Swim Party Held
At Harmony Hills

Mrs. T. R. Traylor entertained
the Sunday school class of the
First Baptist Church taught by
Mrs, A. E. Schwarz with a swim
party Friday night at Harmony
Hill, when several guests were pres-
ent to enjoy the event. The event
was in honor of Jean Vorhes who
is leaving with her family for
Tucson, Arizona, to reside.
After the swim, hamburgers and
cold drinks were served. The hon-
oree received attractive gifts.

Luncheon Thursday
Mrs. Gilson Knapp hcpnored her
sister, Mrs. John Yelverton of
Rockdale with a luncheon last
Thursday. The dining room held
arrangements of white oleanders,
and white candles in brass candela-
bra. In the study were bouquets of
bougainvillea. The time was spent
informally.

Watermelon Party Is
Planned For Tuesday
The Woman’s Society of Chris-
tian Service of the Mercedes First
Methodist Church will honor stud-
ents of the Methodist Church con-
gregation, who are going to college
this fall, with a watermelon party
Tuesday night, August 25, on the
church grounds.
The announcement was made by
Mrs. Garland Leavell, Secretary of
Student Work in the Woman’s So-
ciety.

Community Level
Given Discussion
Aurora Martinez will be honored
with a dance and summer Fiesta
Sunday night at the stock show
grounds in Mercedes.
Miss Martinez is sponsored by
the CYO as a candidate for Queen
and this Fiesta and dance is to
promote her candidacy.
The event will get underway at
8:30 and will be highlighted by
the dance with the Orchestra Cas-
taneda furnishing the music.
The candidate is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. Pedro Martinez.

Rev. M. J. Cordes At
Thursday Meeting
“Disciples at Work in the Home
Church” was the topic of a talk
given by the Rev. M. J. Cordes at
the Thursday meeting of the Dor-
cas Aid of the Immanuel Lutheran
Church at the school building, Mrs.
Marvin Vogel presiding.
Plans were made for entertain-
ing the Women’s Valley Missionary
Lutheran eLague here on Septem-
ber 27. Apopinted on the refresh-
ment committee were Mrs. Ray
Stern, chairman, Mrs. Henry Mott-
miller, and Mrs. George eBeatty. It
was voted to contribute $5.00 to the
Mexican Mission in the Valley.

Franklin Filers, Mrs. Lloyd Heg-
gen, Mrs. Omar L. Hix, Mrs. W.

ert Milligan of Coachella, Califor-
nia, and son, Dick, of Fresno ar-
rived in Edcouch late Monday for
a visit with friends.
Orientation Program
For A&I Freshmen
To Begin Sept. 14
Texas A&I College’s orientation
program for freshmen will start
Sept. 14, with first-year students
being admitted to dormitories Sept.
13, Dr. George McCulley, registrar,
said today in announcing dates for
opening A&I’s fall session.
Sophomores and upperclassmen
will be admitted to dormitories
Sept. 16 and registration for all
regular day students will take place
Sept. 17 and 18, McCulley said.
Evening and Saturday classes
will again be offered for the bene-
fit of teachers and other persons
living nearby who cannot study on
a full-time basis. Similar classes
for resident credit will be conduct-
ed at night on the campus at A.
& I’s branch unit, the Citrus and
Vegetable Training Center at Wes-
laco. Registration for Saturday
classes only wil be held Sept. 12
from 8 to 11 a.m., for evening class-
es only Sept. 16 at 7 p.m., and at
Weslaco for night academic class-
es and agricultural students Sept.
15 at 6 p.m.
The freshman orientation pro-
gram will feature numerous activi-
ties designed to help students plan
their college work and help them
make a success of the vital fresh-
man year.
Department and division direc-
tors and many other faculty mem-
bers will be on hand for confer-
ences with students, and a num-
ber of older students will return
early to help welcome freshmen
and assist in the program.
In addition to various confer-
ences freshmen will be briefed on
campus activities by student lead-
ers and will take part in several
social affairs.
Facilities of the college are best
in its history. As in the past, fh-
struction will be conducted through
six main divisions: agriculture,
arts and sciences, business admin-
istration, engineering, teacher edu-
cation, an dgraduate studies. Men
may enroll in A&I’s ROTC unit
and undertake a program which
leads to Army reserve commissions
upon graduation.
Evening Classes At
A&I Offered For
Fall Semester Study-
Fan semester evening classes at
Texas A&I College carrying resi-
dent credit for the beenfit of citi-
zens of Kingsville and nearby
towns were announced today by
Dr. J. C. Jernigan, dean, who said
seventeen classes on the regular
fall schedule will be listed as even-
ing offerings.
In addition to the Division of
Business Administration plans to
offer, if there is sufficient demand,
six other courses which wil lbring
the total offering to twenty-three
classes.
These classes, the dean said, will
be open to regular students as part
of their load a well as to part-
time students who can attend col-
lege only in the evenings. A spec-
ial registration for those who plan
to take only evening courses will
be eheld i nthe college library
September 16 at 7 p.m.
In most caseg classes will meet
twice weekly, probably from 6:30.1*
to 8 and 8 to 9:30 o’clock. Adjust-
ments may be made to fit the need-
of individual classes.
Evening classes on the regular
fall schedule represent the fields
of economics, English", industrial
arts, mathematics, music, physics,
psychology, Spanih, speech, and
Bible.
Tentative offerings in business
administration are shorthand, typ-
ing, key-driven calculator, account-
ing, business law, and income tax
procedure.

Father Passes Away
At Edinburg Home
Mr. T. H. Bieve, father of Mrs. *
Marian Hughes, passed away at
his home in Edinburg on Thursday.*
August 6.
The body was taken to Austin,
his former home, for services and
burial.
Attending the funeral services
in Austin were Mr. Albert Hughes
of Edcouch, Mr. and Mrs. Wililam
Hughes of Elsa, and Mr. Luther
Hughes of Weslaco.

Recreation for you and your
community was the, purpose of
special sessions conduced by Mrs.
Dawn Duncan, Burnett county
home demonstration agent for 250
members of the Farm Bureau In-
stitute held at Texas A. and M.
College, August 2-6.
As president of the Longhorn
Recreation Laboratory, an annual
gathering of persons interested in
learning ways and means of whole-
some recreation, Mrs. Duncan not
only conducted daily classes for the
farm leaders, but directed social
events for the fifth annual session
o fthe Farm Bureau Institute.
During a general discussion per-
iod he Institute members learned
the’ purpose of the Laboratory held
each year at the Christian Youth
Foundation Camp at Athens. Mrs.
Duncann told them the Laboratory
was designed to assist organiza-
tions such as Farm Bureau as well
as individuals in developing recrea-
tion techniques of value to com-
munity life for farm and ranch
families, and encouraged county
organizations to send representa-
tives. The Board of Directors for
the laboratory will plan the 1954
session whe nit meets at Ganite
Shoals Youth Center at Burnett,
August 15-16. Other officers for the
laboratory are: John L. McPher-
son, Lavaca, vice-president Mrs.
Enid Jones, Beaumont, secretary;
and John I. Bowling, Hale Center,
treasurer. Members of the Board
of Directors also include: Mrs. Jes-
sie McLeroy, Dimmitti Lucille
Moore, recreation specialist, Texas
Agricultural Extension Service,
College Station; William G. Rog-
ers. Floydada; Myriam Kelso, Aus-
tin, and Mrs. Fred Hopkins, Jr.,
Krum.
