Death Begins at Forty
The Travelers Insurance Com-
pany has just Issue* a little
booklet, "Death Begins at Forty.”
In which it Is pointed out that
underlying reasons for America’s
horrifying automobile accident
record in 1937 were "too much
speed and too little courtesy.
According to the booklet, sta-
tistics show that if one has an
accident while driving under
forty miles an hour there Is only
one chance In forty-four that
anyone will be killed, but If the
accident comes while one Is
traveling faster than forty, there
is one chance In nineteen that
some one will be killed. 40,300
persons met death In traffic ac-
cidents last year. Nearly forty
per cent of these fatalities were
directly traceable to speed, and
97 per cent of drivers Involved
In fatal accidents had had one
or more years of driving experi-
ence—In other words, they
should have known better.
The driver guilty of speed and
discourtesy on the highway Is a
potential murderer—and should
be treated as such upon appre-
hension. Common discourtesy Is
usually simply a mark of lgnor-

Health Notes
If business men could work to-
gether for the betterment of
their town and make Induce-
ments to bring In more trade,
without trying to cut the throat
of a competitor; It would be a
great thing to live in a town of
that character. We don’t knew,
but have our doubts about such
a place being In existence.
If you are In a place of busi-
ness to make a purchase which
had you rather hear, a salesman
talk his article or run down
an article sold by a competitor?
Sometimes the so-called run-
ning down of a competitor makes
a buyer wonder If he should not
make an Investigation before de-
ciding Just what to buy. We
have actually seen such things
happen. People have told us
that so-called “knocks" caused
them to go there and buy.
Any line of business has about
all It can handle If It will study
Its particular line and try to Im-
prove It without trying to run
down a competitive line. And,
too. If the faults of competitive
lines are all you can talk to a
prospective buyer you evidently
have few merits in your own
line to talk about.
Such practice is very poor busi-
ness policy and fools very f^w
buyers you come In contact with.
Such talk very often goes right
to the ears of those you are talk-
ing about and that give* a com-
petitor a very low regard tor you
as a business man.—Lampasas

More than 5,000 underprivi-
leged crippled children will spend
a happier May Day this year be-
cause of the work of the Crippled
Children’s Division of the Ex-
periment of Education, which
has helped restore them to a
more normal life, according to
Dr. Oeo. W. Cox, State Health
officer, whose department Is co-
operating with the May Day-
Child Health Day State-wide
movement.
Among the twelve divisions of
the Department of Education Is
the Crippled Children’s Division
whose work Is the correction of
physical deformities and the
training to overcome such handi-
caps. Through ministrations of
this division, the child who has
watched his friends at play may
be able to Join them. What
greater happiness may be
brought to a child.
In the enthusiasm to do good,
many blame this division for
failure to take every call, with-
out realising that this division
Is bound by Legislative Act to the
definition of a crippled child as
“any person of normal mentali-
ty under twenty-one years of
age, whose physical functions or
movements are Impaired by rea-
son of a joint, bone, or muscle de
feet or deformity, to the extent
that the child Is or may be ex-

“What to do about files?
Screens—more screens, better
screens. Small mesh screens.
Screens which fit. Screens which
close tight and stay tight.
Screens without sags, rips, or
rents—screens that absolutely
keep files out of the house. Of
course there are flytraps and fly
paper, preventatlves. sprays, and
the like. But In my opinion
there is only one way to handle
the fly question—prohibition by
screens.
“The mesh of the screen should
be not larger than 18; an "18-
mesh would be better. Screens
should covqr the whole window;
always on the outside. AU porch
es. both front and back should
be boarded up at least one foit
from the floor In order to pre-
vent small animals from scratch-
holes In the wire or children
from knocking holes. All chim-
neys should be covered by
screens.”
