versity of Texas Institute of
Texan Cultures at San An-
tonio until April 13.
Seventeen brightly-painted
wagons, each accurate to the
smallest detail, and scores of
animals and performers are on
display In a “big top” in The
Institute** Hall of Mirror*
romt, Wed chicken
Wooden elephants, horses,
tigers and monkeys share
three revolving sawdust-filled
rings with clowns, acrobats,
animal trainers and a strong
man. Side show acts, from
trained seals to cartoon char-
acters, are included.
Posters and music from the
Hertaberg Circus CoUection
will add to the atmosphere.
Wagenfuehr, a New Braun-
fels barber since 1937, carved
and painted the entire collec-
tion between 1950 and 1960.
He named it in honor of his
mother, Francis Wagenfuehr,
who died just before its com-
pletion.
The German Texan’s wood-
carving hobby began with air-
plane ship models, but
changed direction when he
saw a picture of a circus
wagon in a newspaper. Once
he was able to obtain blue-
prints for the wagons, Wagen-
fuehr devoted the next ten
years to circus carvings. His
first piece, the man with
dumbetls, can be found In
The Institute display.
Since putting aside the
circus (“1 got tired of carving
horses,” he explained), hr
has constructed elaborate
models of sailing ships and
classic automobiles. Now he

“I got that last one from
the cover of a 1941 Colliers
magazine. I like to work from
newspaper and magazine pic-
tures. I’ve been collecting
these kinds of pictures for
a long time.”
The circus exhibit is free
and open to the public.
The Institute is located at
the southeast comer of
Hemisfair Plaza, South Bowie
at Durango, open 9 a.m. to
5 p.m., Tuesday through
Sunday.

CONTESTANTS HONORED-Contestants in the forth-
coming Miss Black Kerr County Pageant to be held
February 15, were honored during two recent parties.
The nine young women were luncheon guests of
Charles Schreiner IUU at the Y O Ranch. The group ate
at the Chuck Wagon and then touted the ranch. They
also attended a Holiday Formal ball held at Knights of
Columbus Hall.
