There it 09 question that the American steel Indus-
dined this year, from 100.9 million tons in 1966 to a
projected 94 million tons in 1967. Yet even as it has de-
clined, ported steel hat comprised an increased per
indication* now are that foreign-made steel will
account for about 12 per cent, or 11 million tons, of total
domestic consumption this year, reports the industry
magazine, Steel.
This Is an increase from 10.7 per cent of the 100.9
million tons used In 1966. American exports of steel,
once amounting to several million tons, nave fallen to
about L7 million tons.

give a boost to foreign competition, says Steel, both by
making British steel cheaper and by forcing downward
price adjustments by other steel-exporting nations.

now takes more dollars to buy the same amount of
goods and services.
This is not to mention the even greater advantage
the latest price increase will give to foreign competition.
American steelmakers would like to curb that ad-
vantage by having the government establish Import
quotas for foreign countries. So would the makers of a
lot of other products.
In light of the way the steel companies have react-
ed to the face of foreign competition in an open-market
situation, the nation should think long ami hard before
