DETROIT (AP) - Henry
Ford H said today that while
1907 has been a difficult year for
the automobile Industry, things
look much better for 1988.
The board chairman of Ford
Motor Co. outlined his views In
remarks prepared for delivery
today at his annual Christmas-
time news conference.
Ford said auto aales in the
United States this yesr would
wind up at about A5 million
cars, including aom* 785,000 im-
ports, but he added a prediction
that the market wou|d bounce
back for a 9.3 million salea year
in 1968.
Ford said the recent 50-day
national strike of Ford's auto
building plants was “unneces-
sary as h waa costly but there
was nothing within reason we
could have done to avoid it or to
settle it much sooner.”
The Ford chairman added,
"Today, more than three
months after the beginning of
the strike, its effects are still
hampering our sales.
" Ford announced a drastic re-
- duction in his firm's building
and expansion plans for 1968
with $515 million allocated to
next year, compared with $690
million this year and $693 mil-
lion last year.,.
He explained, "Because we
have completed the most urgent
of our facilities program, our
capital spending next yeay will
be lower than it has been in a
number of yean."
