A BAD SITUATION
THESE TWO YOUNGSTERS are among pupils who walk to and from Pumphrey Elementary
School along the narrow shoulders of Baker Road and sometimes through this open drainage
ditch, which often contains water. Todd Pence, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Pence of 5401
Hazel, peers into a deep manhole that has no cover while 10-year-old Ron Nalvar, son of Mrs.
Joya Naivar of 3400 Shady Hill Lane, uses a narrow board to ford the ditch, which separates
Pumphrey School from their homes. Both are fifth graders. Efforts are being made to correct
safety hazards to children who walk to and from Pumphrey.

He was a little man with a great big heart
I’ve never known anyone who enjoyed life and loved people
more than Harry Levine.
Death came suddenly when Harry suffered a heart attack
late Thursday aftfeteoofi
We will miss him very much at. The Baytown Sun. Harry
visited here frequently, bringing news about tee Station 3
Volunteer Fire Department and Baytown Emergency Corps.
But more often than not, Harry just came in to say hello, trade
a few jokes and offer us his traditional stick of gum.
We loved to argue. Ours was the kind of banter back and
forth that only good friends can enjoy. ,
When Harry would try to order me around, I’d remind hinj I
was bigger than he so I always won the argument.
But we never got mad. I can’t imagine anyone eyer getting
mad at Harry, a man whose main interest in life was helpipg
other people. ■
Harry and I had a running “argument” about an engraved
plaque the Baytown Emergency Corps gave me in appre-
ciation of news coverage.
Harry never liked the place where I bung the plaque on my
office wall. He ordered me to put it in another spot he thought
more appropriate
“I like it where it is,” I’d insist. Harry would fuss back and
then give me another stick of gum, laugh and talk awhile and
then leave, telling me again, “Move the plaque.”
We had another of our fun “fusses” not too long ago about a
teer Fire Department souvenirs to run iritt a story cm toe Ms-
tory of the department.
Harty wanted firefighter Bernard (Rive, grandson of tot of
his best friends, the hie Refly Mayor C. & 08**, to,8* to the
picture with him.
We compromised and took bote shod twt ran Ihe me wttt
just Harry to it, as I had origtoagy piaanfri «
I kept reminding Harry there was 00 sense » argntag «8Ji a
stubborn woman, especially a stubborn nmpajNriraoxm. He
agreed about one. thing — I was stubborn.
At times, Iknow I really did let Harty down. Uhefltottosebi
asked me to take a photo of a fire department stopby nod f
never got over there. I remember I was iU ffist day bat I tomdd
have asked someone else to take the picture.
The fire department and Emergency Corps were
pride and joy. A pioneer volunteer, he was one of tbe mast
respected and beloved members of Fire Station 2 Votantoer
Department v
