DeBakey Says Artificial Heart Violates Ethics
HOUSTON, Tex. (AP) -
Noted heart surgeon Dr. Mich-
ael E. DeBakey said his work
on an artificial heart continues
but he believes any implanta-
tion in a human being at this
time would be a violation of
medical ethics.
DeBakey, president of Baylor
College of Medicine, spoke to
newsmen at a briefing about the
progress of his research, started
in 1964, into building an artifi-
cial heart.
He said some 18 animals have
received artificial hearts in his
laboratories and none has lived
more than 12 hours. 1116 most
any test animal has lived with
such a device in other research
centers is 90 hours, he said.
It is for this reason, DeBakey
said, that it would be unethical
to use an artificial heart be-
cause the surgeon could not
promise the patient more than
12 to 90 hours of life.
As for using an artificial
heart Until a transplant could be
done, he said, "You do not know
when you’re going to get a do-
nor.”
Dr. Denton A. Cooley, a sur-
geon at St. Luke's Hospital here,
used an artificial heart in 1969,
placing it in the chest of Haskell
Karp, 47. At the time, Cooley
said it was necessary to do so
to sustain Karp’s life.
Karp lived 65 hours with the
artificial device, which used an
outside power source, but died a
day after receiving the heart of
a Massachusetts woman.
DeBakey said Tuesday efforts
to make a useable artificial
heart have been hung up on
such problems as duplicating
.the natural lining of the heart.
