PX Squabbles
Arising Between
Yanks, Koreans
SAIGON, South Viet Viet N*m
(AP) — Resentment is growing
between U.S. and South Korean
•' servicemen in South Viet Nam
is a result of rivalry tor such
highly valued post exchange
items as TV sets.
‘ The Americans complal n that
Koreans are organized systema-
tically to snatch up such items
soon 'after they appear In the,
PXs, Some Americans said they
suspect the Koreans are selling
the goods on the black market.
A Sooth Koreart spokesman
replied that some of his coun-
try’s servicemen have com-
plained that certain American
PX fnanagers keep desirable
merchandise out of sight until
r* U.S. servicemen have had a
crack at it.
Hev told a reporter the South
Korean command is bearing
down hard to prevent black
market dealings by Korean
troops. Korean Criminal Inves-
tigation agents have received no
"reports of any improper resale
of TV sets by Korean service-
men, the spokesman added.
One day last week, an observ-
er standing outside the down-
town PX counted IS Koreans
emerging with cartons contain-
ing TV sets. In the same period
only three Americans were seen
to come out bearing TV cartons.
The TV sets sold for $98.75
each — more than three
months' pay for a South Korean
private first class, who makes
m..... $1 a day. The pay rises 50 cents
% * day for each higher step in
enlisted rank. Korean lieuten-
ants, at the bottom of the Officer
pay scale, get $4 a day.
A spokesman for the U.S. Mil-
itary Command said the 45,000
South Korean troops tn Viet
. Nam have exactly the same PX
^^pl^egM’bsifie^Bl.OOHFmert:
cans.
; The U S. Command issues PX
cards to Korean Headquarters
in numbered lots. Korean con-
trol officers then distribute
them ^individually to their
troops. Each card is accounted
for by number. '
> In purchasing such rationed
---- items «as TV sets,. th* buyer
must sign the sales slip and eh-
ter his card number. This is
used in tracing goods recovered
from the black market.
ALCOA Is Planning To
Expand Its Facilities
PITTSBURGH tAP) - Alumi-
num -Co, of Ameria said today
it plans a muitimillion dollar
expansion of its fabricating fa-
cilities to meet demands of the
electrical wire and cable indus-
try.
ALCOA said the first step will
be construction of an addition
to its Rockdale, T^x., plant to
house high-speed continuous
casting equipment. ,,
A spokesman said the addition
. would cost "severaWmUHoh dol-
lars." but no firm price tag was
put on either the Texas project
or the overall expansion.
John Harper. ALCOA presi-
dent, said the Rockdale expan-
sion "is the forerunner of other
planned casting and fabricating
facilities to meet the developing
needs of one of aluminum's
fastest growing markets.” .
,. ..- Details ot the other projects
