EVERGREEN by Belva Plain
This is an epic novel that
sweeps the reader up in the
dramatic saga of Anna
Friedman — beautiful,
bewitching Anna, who had
come to New York at the
turn of the century from a
Polish Stetl. Yearning for a
better life, she leaves the
sweatshops to find work as a
maid in the home of the
elegant Werners of the upper
West Side. Anna is tom
between the love of two men
— virile, aristocratic Paul
Werner, scion of a
German-Jewish family, and
Joseph Friedman, who adores
her, but who is an immigrant
as poor as Anna. It is Joseph
she married, and, through an
act of illicit passion that will
follow her all her days, Anna
lifts him from poverty to the
millions of real-estate dollars
on which the Friedman
dynasty will be based for
generations to come.
SEARCH FOR ENCHANT-
MENT by Shirley Sanders
Liberty Jones’s only
heritage was five words: The
brave shall inherit Liberty.
Five words, her only link to
the past. Liberty made a vow
to live up to those words and
now at eighteen she was the
most promising history
student at the university
where she was working
toward her master’s degree.
Working all day at Steele
enterprises as a mail clerk,
rushing to classes in the
evening, and returning
exhausted to her dingy
apartment, she couldn’t help
feeling cold, lonely, and
frightened of the future.
William Steele McCord,
owner of Steele enterprises
lived in another world , . .
rich, successful, and
notorious for the beautiful
fortune-hunters in his life.
One day his car almost ran
Liberty down and something
about her intrigued and
haunted him . . . but he
didn’t believe in love. When
his secretary suggested that
his wealth made it impossible
to discover whether a woman
could love him for himself,
Steele decided to take on her
challenge. He arranged an
elaborate masquerade to
prove — to himself — that
someone like Liberty Jones
would be like all the rest.
SHOWDOWN AT EUREKA
by James Wesley
“The men who did this
have got themselves a date
with death . . . There’ll be a
showdown at Eureka ...”
Jeff Duncan vowed as he
viewed the corpse of his
foster father, Abe Raddatz.
Jeff had heard that each gun
or rifle makes a set of
distinctive marks on a bullet
and, armed with one spent
bullet from Raddatz’s body,
he set out to discover the
killers. But can he discover
them before they kill him, or
those close to him - Jeff
picked up more hard evidence
along the way — more spent
bullets with their distinctive
pin markings — and finally set
a clever plot to catch the
brutal killers. . . but the
killers might not be the only
ones destroyed by the terror
that stalked Eureka.
NURSE SANDRA’S CHOICE
by Lucy Bowdler
In the five years she had
been way from her native
New England, young nurse
Sandra Colson had adapted
quite well to her new life in
Minnesota, had made friends,
and had become a respected
member of the staff at St.
James Hospital. And yet,
every fall, when the leaves
started to turn color and drop
from the trees, she could not
free herself from the memory
of New England and what
might have been ... if Dr.
Bruce Jennings had been true,
if he had meant all those
things he had said. When Dr.
Harvey offered her a
part-time job in the Lamaze
natural-birth clinic he
intended to start, Sandy got a
chance to use the extra
courses in obstetrics she had
taken. She also got a chance
to see exactly how strong the
armor she wore around her
heart really was.
DIABETES WITHOUT
FEAR by Dr. Joseph I.
Goodman
Now, Dr. Joseph I.
Goodman presents the truth
about diabetes. Separating
the fact from fiction, he lays
out simply and inclusively the
latest medical techniques,
courses of treatment and
positive scientific realities
about diabetes and marriage,
children, diet, complications,
insulin, and day-to-day care.
He recommends diets and
testsbased not on “diabetic
neurosis,” but on what the
diabetic actually needs; and
reveals the tremendous
up-to-date ! advances in
diabetes prevention and
control. Above all, he shows
how, with common sense and
informed proper precautions
the diabetic today can truly
look forward to a long,
healthy, normal life - a life
of diabetes without fear.
