Kilgore appointed
To Two Committees
WASHINGTON — Congressman
Joe M. Kilgore (D-Texas) announc-
ed his appointment to the Post
Office and Civil Service and the
Government Operation Commit-
tees, and at the same time dis-
closed his withdrawal from the
active practice of law in an Edin-
burg, Texas, law firm with which
he had been associated for eight
years.
Kilgore said he had advised his
law partners o^ his decision to
withdraw from the active practice
of law before he left Texas to
come to Washington for the open-
ing of the 84th Congress. Appoint-
ment by the House administration
to the two committee posts, Kil-
gore said, re-emphasized his deci-
sion to devote his full time to his
Congressional duties.
“Scope of both committees will
be broad,” Kilgore said, “in view
of recommendations already made
by the President for postal and

E. Brown, Jr., son of Mrs. Mer-
ry Frances Brown of Mercedes
has been graduated from the
U. S. Naval Pre-Flight School at
Pensacola and is now assigned
to the Whiting Field U. S. Naval
Auxiliary Air Station, Milton,
Fla., for primary flight training.
Cadet Brown was graduated
from Mercedes High School, at-
tended New Mexico Military In-
stitute for two years and last
year was a student at the Uni-
versity of Texas where he was a
member of Beta Theta Phi. He
entered the Naval Aviation Cadet
program through the U. S. Naval
Air Station at Dallas in Sep-
tember.
Hormon Villarreal
Debate Team Member
DURANT — Hormon ' Villarreal
Mercedes, is a member of the
Southeastern State College debate
team which is coached by Ruth
Hatchett, member of the English
department.
The debate team has attended
Texas forensic tournaments at
Baylor University and Abilene
Christian College and will be re-
presented in events in other states.

4 New Members
Added To Board
Of Power Firm
Four new members have been
added to the Board of Directors
of Central Power and Light Com-
pany, Lon C. Hill, chairman of the
board, announced today.
The newly-elected directors are
Richard King of Corpus Christi,
Albert Martin of Laredo, Claude
K. McCan of Victoria and Lt. Gen.
Robert W. Harper of Harlingen.
“It is an honor to have theso*
outstanding South Texan§ assoeiat-
ed with our company,” .Hill said.
“I know that their participation
in our business will greatly benefit
both CPL and the people it serves.”
King is widely known in South
Texas as a rancher, banker and
businessman. At present he is en-
gaged in the management of ranch
properties, is chairman of the
board of directors of the Corpus
Christi National Bank, and vice-
chairman of the Nueces County
Navigation District. He is also a

tive duty with the United States
Air Force in June last year and
is now engeged in the practice of
law at Harlingen. He is a native
of Seattle, Washington, but no
stranger to South Texas, having
earned his wings and acquired his
legal education in Sf$ Antonio. His
distinguished fciilitary career in-
cludes numerous top-level train-;
ing assignments which ggrned him
the designation by the Saturday
Evening Post of “dean of military
educators”. During the six years
prior to his retirement he served
as Commanding General of the Air
-Training Command.
With the addition of four new
directors, the CPL Board now
consists of 11 members. The others
are J. L. Bates, W. D. Boone,
Dwight Carlsen, N. A. Easter, G.
W. Gilliam, Lon C. Hill and E. S.
Joslin, all of Corpus Christi.

business and civic leader. He serv-
ed the city as mayor for 14 years
and has been consistently active
in community affairs. He is a
director of the Texas-Mexican Rail-
road Company, a director of the
Union National Bank, trustee of
the oil interests of the late Ser-
vando Benavides, and a former
regent of Texas A. & I. College
at Kingsville. He is a member of
the Southwestern Cattle Raisers
Association and has also been ac-
tive in the banking business.
McCan is a lifetime cattleman
and -a past president of the South-
western Cattle Raisers Associa-
tion. He is manager and partner
of the J. A. McFaddin Estate and
of Welder and McCan, and is chair-
man of the board of directors of
the Victoria National Bank. He has
served on the Texas Prison Board,
the Livestock Sanitary Commis-
sion and as chairman of the State
Agricultural Stabilization and Con-
