CARLO,Monaco
(AP)- The family of
Princes? Grace
divided to remove
her from a life sup-
port* syBtem several
hours after her brain
ceased to function,
two doctors who at-
tended her said to-
day.
“We told the family
there was absolutely
no hope for
recovery,” Dr. Jean
Chatelain, chief
surgeon at Princess
Grace Hospital, told
The Associated Press
in reference to the
life support system.
“It was a very emo-
tional decision for the
family. They, of
course, all were very
sad.”
Chatelain said the
decision to stop er-!
tificial lung and heart
machines wasjcnade
Tuesday night at the
hospital by Grace’s
husband, Prince
Rainier III, and their
children,*" Princess
Caroline, 25, and
Prince Albert, 24,
after consultations
with a team of physi-
cians.
Dr. Jean Duplay,
chief of neurosurgery
at Pasteur Hospital
in Nice who was
- among those physi-
cians, said Grace’s
brain had ceased to
function around 6
p.m. (noon EDT)
Tuesday and that she
was then kept alive
only by the machines.
Duplay said
Grace’s heart stop-

A palace spokeswo-
man said Duplay and
Chatelain neglected
to inform palace offi-
cials she suffered a
stroke while driving
the car that tumbled
into a Riviera ravine.
“A stroke, it could
happen to anybody,”
palace spokeswoman
Nadia LaCoste told
reporters Thursday. .
“Why didn’t they tell
us?” ;•
The disclosure
threw a new twist in-
to confused accounts
surrounding the
death of the former
American movie star
Grace Kelly.
A stroke, an
obstruction of blood
to the brain, could
ha.ve caused the
princess to feel faint
or dizzy, making her
lose control of the 10-
year-old Rover 3500
sedan that tumbled
120 feet off a twisting
mountain road near
Monte Carlo on Mon-
day. Earlier reports*
said the'car^-ij-ihjii
mighthave failed!
Duplay, chief
neurologist at the
central hospital in
nearby Nice, France,
told Radio Luxem-
bourg that Grace’s
daughter, Princess
Stephanie, tried to
stop the car but was
unable to yank the
handbrake before,
plunged off the road
After interviewing
Stephanie, who re-
mains hospitalized,
Duplay said he
dismissed sugges-
tions that she was
driving. At 17, she is a
year too young to
hold a driver’s
licence.
But the man who
pulled Stephanie
from the wreckage
said she came out the
driver’s door, Police
said that because the
car flipped several
timet, this did not
prove the young
princess had been at
thewheel.
Duplay said an ex-
amination of Grace
with a scanner Mon-
day night showed the
brain damage was
such that no opera
tion was possible. At
that time, the palace
was publicly repor-
ting Grace was in
satisfactory condi-
tion although she had
a broken thigh, ribs
and collarbone. ,
While Grace’s silk-
draped body lay in
state in the palace
chapel, her tiny
Mediterranean prin-
cipality began retur-
ning to normal Thurs-
day.
