The Ballad of Davy Crockett"
has 17 verses, and the students at
Crockett Elementary School
know them all
For most people. Davy Crockett
lives on as one of Texas' greatest
legends and mote colorful
adopted sons But' Crockett
students might swear he lives on
in a more literal sense
A close facsimile of the Alamo
hero portrayed by Gary Nelson
and Ronnie Marsh, came to the
school for the dedication of a por
trait of Davy Crockett
Masterminding the project was
Margaret Painter, a Parent
Teacher Organization volunteer
"! thought it would be nice if the
PTO’s annual project could be
donating a jpicture of Davy
Crockett, the school’s namesake
-joiheschool she explains
Accomplishing this plan took
three months of work and
research Mrs Painter began her
search for a portrait by calling
several state senators They told
her of Ellen Kennedy’s work in
restoring the picture of Davy
Crockett that hangs in the Mate
capi to,
Mrs Kennedy a Houston based
artist was more than cooperative
in supplying Mrs Painter, with
negatives of her work These
formed the basis for the high
quality print that has been
donated to Crockett Elementary
School
In her research. Mrs Painter
w as aided by Leonard and Marcia]
Stasney Stasnev is a
descended of the Alamo hero
, Davy Crockett could never
have come to life for the students
without the help of Nelson and
Marsh and Joe Oxford, who loan
ed the buckskin suit, and Paul
Bettes, who loaned the musket
and coon skin cap
Nelson told the children that
everything in Crockett’s life came
from the land itself
"His pants and coat were made
of buckskin." he said "He didn't
have pockets so he kept money ui
a flap in the top of his coonskin
bat. His clothes didn't have but
tons He used pieces of bone
instead of watching TV,
everyone had to make their own
shoes Crockett had a bone-handle
skinning knife He needed it to get
his clothes '*
Nelson ran through the steps in-
volved in loading a musket He
added, however that Crockett'
was such a master with the
weapon he could fire and reload in
30 seconds.
Still, this time period could pose
difficulties Paul Bettes, who
loaned the musket for the school
program claims Davy Crockett
really did fight a bear in the
• woods,
Crockett shot the creature with
Old Betsy but before he could
reload, the bear'pouncedroh him
hand combat < or perhaps
should say hand to paw combat, MASON. Mich
until Crockett finally triumphed , Ap, _ A mai) wh0

JAN LAMMERST, tefL .11 the architect who designed Crockett Elemen-
tary School He entertained students with Ms banjo piaytng at a
dedicatioo ceremony for the school’s new portrait of Davy Crockett
Crockett himself seems reincarnated in the person of Gary Nelson,
right, who donned pioneer garb for the student ceremony Graham
Painter Jr. a student at Crockett is obviously impressed by the man
who who once killed a bear with his "bare ' hands
