1990 Homecoming
Pirates Host Winless Bears
by Charles Sullivan
The Mathis Pirates host West
Oso’s winless Bears Friday night in
the annual homecoming game, as
the Bears still look for their first win
after 18 consecutive losses over the
past three seasons.
But, one should not be deceived by
West Oso’s pitiful numbers, such as
46 points scored and 245 points allow-
ed in seven games this season. The
Bears have played their best two
ball games of the year against two of
the Coastal Bend’s stronger teams,
Ingleside and Orange Grove.
Ingleside had to score late to take
a 9-6 win over the Bears in the fourth
week of the season and, last week,
the Bears missed two field goals in
the final 30 seconds to lose a 21-20

Lady Pirates 2nd
At District Meet
The Mathis Lady Pirates took se-
cond place honors at the District 30-
3A Cross Country Track Meet,
hosted by West Oso at Guth Park,
last weekend.
West Oso repeated their feat of a
year ago, sweeping both the boys
and girls varsity titles.
The Pirate varsity finished third
in the team standings, behind the
Bears and George West.
The top two teams and first five in-
dividual places qualified for the
Region IV meet.
Rachel Ynfante and Lisa Morin
paced the Lady Pirates, placing
fourth and eighth, respectively, in-
dividually. Ynfante turned in a
13:41, while Morin was clocked in
14:33 for the two-mile course.
Rounding out the Lady Pirate
.team were Rose Ann Vidaurri, 15th
(15:46); Belinda Salinas, 16th
(16:34); and Elizabeth Ruiz, 17th
(16:40).
In the boys’ varsity division,
Tomas Flores was ninth in 18:04 for
the three-mile course to lead the
Pirates.
Other Pirate performers included
Joe DeLeon, 13th (19:15); Charles
Munoz, 14th (19:17); Eric Rivera,
18th (19:58); Juan Gonzales, 20th
(20:30); Juan Ynfante, 21st (20:40);
and Jesus Garcia, 27th (23:24).
The Pirate JV won the district ti-
tle, as they were the only full team in
competition.
Making up the team were John
Eric Garcia, 2nd; Francisco De La
Rosa, 5th; David Aguilar, 6th; Job
Garcia, 7th; Michael Gray, 8th;
Christopher Padron, 9th; and
Teodoro Pena, 10th.
decision to Orange Grove, winner of
seven straight this season.
With some excellent athletes on
the field, the Bears have shown they
are capable of playing this game of
football. Performing consistently
and getting blown out early have
been two of their major problems.
Sophomore Sam Butler (175) and
senior Raymond Lopez (200) lead
the West Oso ground game from
their running back positions, with
senior quarterback Richard Mott
(170) the field general. They lead a
veer attack that is predominantly a
running game, but the Bears will go
to the air to keep the defense honest.
End Thurman Hamilton (170, jr.)
and wingback Joe Pena (140, soph.)
are Mott’s favorite targets fo? the
passing game. However, Bear
Coach Willie Trevino will occa-
sionally try to slip Butler in at one of
those positions, and go deep to the
talented sophomore.
Last week, the Bears balanced
their attack with 140 yards rushing
and passing, while outgaining the
offense-minded Bulldogs, 280-232.
Mott had a 50-yard touchdown pass
to Hamilton and also ran in from a
yard out. Butler added a one-yard
scoring run, as the Bears nearly
doubled their point output for the
season.
Thirty of their 45 points this season
have been scored against Ingleside
and Orange Grove; so, at 0-7 and 0
for 1989-90, they have nothing to lose
by pulling out all the stops.
The only sure ticket to a victory
over the Bears seems to be building
an early lead. In games where their
opposition has scored early and
often, the Bears’ level of play has
been worthy of their 0-7 record.
Defensively, Butler is again one of
the standouts, operating out of a
linebacker slot, while nose guard
Joe Trejo (200, sr.) nails down the
middle of the defensive line.
Joining Trejo in the line are
tackles Robert Bigger (200, jr.) and
Thomas Garcia (195, jr.) and ends
Joseph Perez (200, jr.) and Floyd
Campbell (139, soph.).
Hamilton and Butler make up the
inside linebacking team, with Ar-
nold Rodriguez (160, soph.) and
Taton Rose (160, jr.) at the comers.
Mott and junior Eric White (160) are
at the safety positions.
The Pirates will need a quick start
this week, a luxury they have not af-
forded themselves often this season,
to keep the Bears out of the contest.
The return of senior quarterback
Frank Gonzales last week bolstered
the Pirate passing game, as he
threw for 252 yards and one
touchdown, completing 12 of 26
passes, with two interceptions.
However, the Pirate running
game was shut down to 15 yards on
25 attempts, a trend that must be
reversed, if the Pirates are to be any
kind of playoff threat.
The Pirates have been a
predominantly running team, with
1,020 yards rushing and 686 yards
passing this season. Before last
week’s totals, the Pirates had rush-
ed for 1,005 yards and passed for on-
