The Next Texas Mevie Star May Be
Local "Star Of Toawrrow" Winner
There’s probably not a girl be-1
tween 16 and 22 in Glade water
who wouldn't like to change
places with glamorous Linda Dar-1
nell. And, when Linda Darnell
was between 16 and 22, chances
are she felt somewhat the same
way about movie queens.
When Linda Darnell was a sen- i
ior at Sunset High School in Dai-1
las, Texas, she was interested in
acting and dancing. She apeared I
in a Teen-age Theatre conducted
by a department store, she was |
a Rangerette during the Texas
Centennial, conducting guests
through the grounds at the State
Fair of Texas; she appeared in a

local playhouse production and
was usually somewhere on the
scene when a theatrical produc-
tion was in the making.
Dallas critics discouraged Mrs.
Darnell nad her daughter, Mon-
etta, due to lack of experience
and a feeling that Monetta would
not photograph well. The late
Ivan Kahn, from Twentieth Cen-
tury Fox, often toured the country
searching for new talent. While
visiting in Dallas, his friend, John
Rosenficld, well known drama
critic, introduced him to Monetta
Darnell. Mr. Kuhn casually men-
tioned that she mgiht drop in the
Holywood studios lor a screen test
sometime. That was enough for
Mrs. Darnell. She promptly track-
ed the family bags and took Mon-
etta to Hollywood.
Contrary to expectations, Mon-
etta screened beautifully and was
given the lead in “Hollywood
Hotel,” which was rewritten to
fit her. Monetta, then fifteen
years old, became Linda and the
rest of her history is well known
to theatre-goers.
Maybe the next Texas star will
come from Gladewater. Maybe
she will be LIGHT CRUST
Flour's Star of Tomorrow! Find
out more about the fabulous con-
test which offers the winner a
trip to Hollywood for two and a
screen test at Republic Pictures!
